P-Dogs and a .22 magnum

I plan on taking my .22 mag as one of my pdog rifles this year. I prefer to use CCI HP ammo but the prices are are SUPER inflated right now. About 50% higher than normal.
I have on hand 1,000rds of CCI solids. I know the HP is more explosive but will the solids stil produce one shot stops humainly.
Yes i understand placement is important.

I think that you will be fine. I always take a .17 HMR with me every year and shooting partner brings along his .22 Mag. While I prefer the Hummer, I have to admit that the .22 Mag does a fine job and dispatching pasture poodles. I don't think that Dave took any past 100 yards or so but none required a second shot. It certainly does a LOT better job than conventional .22 lr ammo does. No doubt about that.

Boy that doesn't give you much range. What 100/150 yards? We hunt some very secluded prairie dog towns and after a few shots that close 'and they turn into more like 200/250 yards LONG shot for a 22 mag.

I think the .22 Magnum will do fine on shorter shots (100-150 yards), but the solids will probably be an issue. I have shot a lot of California ground squirrels with my 22 Mag and the solids never performed well. I quit using them after a morning of a half-a-dozen dragging themselves into the hole. Unless you are accurate enough to shoot them in the head/chest area, every time, you will hear a pop, then watch the PD scurry into its hole.

You may be right, Keith. A softpoint will killed them DRT but there may be a runner or two with a FMJ. I have had them run down their holes with a good solid hit of .22 lr HP and could hear their pitiful thrashing for sometimes several minutes before they expired. I never did like that at all.

You don't hear that If you use a 338/378...

I dont hear that after a hit from my .220 Swift either. Of course, since their lungs along with their other internal organs are scattered over a 10 square foot area that would be rather difficult.

I would pay the extra for better bullets. You can find deals online, if you watch sites like AmmoSeek.com. Also, hit a few stores on the drive out and you may find some deals.

FYI on the Armscor ammo. I just used some to shoot some smaller ground squirrels up in NE California. They grouped decently in my Browning A-Bolt 22 Mag, but the old style hollow-point in the bullet did not perform as well as I had hoped.

Whenever possible, I like to blow varmints up. That ensures a quick death. I do not mind spending a bit more to do so.

Have you checked any of the gun shops just out of your area? I hit lots of small gun shops on the way up to NorCal a couple of weeks ago and they all had the Hornady 30 VMax 22 Mag ammo for around $15-$16 a box. Cabela's has it come up every few days (they had it this morning), but you are only allowed one box at a time. If you have a store near you, order one a day when it is available and have it shipped to the store. Have a couple of buddies do the same and you'll get some. I'll keep an eye out for you online.

It doesn't hurt to take it along, there're times when the 22Mag is fine. I've shot gobs of pd's with one. Best use is for that pocket of close in targets you stumble upon, it happens now and then. Or as a window gun for the onesy / twosy's when cruising an area. But 22Mag is definitely not a primary gun for pd's. At any kind of distance you definitely want more....not exciting at even 150 and at 200 or 250 they just fall over. No fun in that. Take your solids and use them for close in shots and don't even mess with anything more. There are better pd cartridges.

Oh no, i wasnt banking on my .22mag as my primary. I have a pair of .223s for that purpose. And then a custom 22-243 Win for longer range fun.
