"Padding" on AR shell deflector......

I've seen pics of several ARs that had something that looked like double-sided tape or possibly foam tape on the case deflector. I don't get any brass damage from this area, so the only thing I can see that it is doing is protecting the finish on the upper from the brass deflecting off it.

Anybody done this....or know the actual reasoning behind it?

Velcro.

Some don't want the finish coming off, where the empty case hits the deflector. Not being one of these types myself,I've found over the years that a small cloth soaked in CLP with a few light rubs, gets most of it off anyway.

Electrical tape might serve the purpose and be less obtrusive. Cheap and can be applied as needed and doesn't make the gun look strange. Don

Steve, I just picked up an old truck inner tube to make a deflector like, I think it was SkeetLee, had made for his to deflect the casings straight down into a towel/tray on the bench..

Hopefully, it will reduce the impacts on the rifle. Like Hangtime, mine usually comes off pretty easily...My only problem is on a painted rifle, it chips off the paint..

I have a brass catcher that velco's around the forearm, but if it shifts, it causes cases to get caught in the bolt carrier.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I put a piece for skateboard tape on mine to help keep them out of my shirt. Left handed shooter. It will also dorp them in a relatively small area which makes it easier to find them.

It cracks me up... on AR15.com the old timers bust the new guys chops if their shell deflectors aren't chewed up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yeah....they're kinda "set-in-stone" with some of their beliefs. And some of them won't hold water, either. They preach that a DPMS isn't a reliable weapon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So back to this situation.....are you guys saying that putting the velcro or whatever on the case deflector will change the way that the cases fly away from the rifle?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

On THAT SITE , a lot of members look for ANYTHING to bust someone's chops over. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I swear, I think they've got members, whose sole purpose in being a member is scanning posts just looking for any type of faux pas, or any type of simple question so they can come back with some smart a$$ reply, showing everyone their "expertise". The only thing I can find of value there, are their copies of tech manuals, etc. However, to each his own ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hangtime.

It may change the angle they are deflected since the cases are now hitting against soft material instead of hard aluminium (scientific pronunciation) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif .

My deflector was denting the cases so I put a piece of stick on plastic velcro on it and solved the problem. I eventually cut the ejector spring off a couple turns which took care of the denting problem. After adding a scope using rings instead of a one piece mount I was able to add a case deflector and now it drops the cases in front of me at my feet.
