Pawnee Grasslands

Just to let everyone know, the Pawnee Grasslands in Colorado gets hot this time of year and definitely bring bug spray. Got eaten alive by mosquitoes on the 2nd set, flies on the 5th, and ants elsewhere. We managed to call 2 in on our 4th stand but they spotted the truck which we thought was hidden but it was not at all from their location. Held up and gave us a couple minutes of alarm barks out quite a ways.

Cool things we saw- A badger(my first), lots of pronghorn, and found out there’s burrowing owls. Thought they were prairie dogs but the glass showed big eyes and feathers!!

Maybe next time we’ll find prairie dogs or drop some coyotes. Or get some pictures!

So you educated 2 Coyotes in an area that is already over hunted in the winter, and to top it off you went out in bug and Rattlesnake infested country along with 97 degree weather, is that what you are telling us?

Haha if that’s what a pressured area is like I couldn’t imagine the non-pressured! 2 coyotes in 5 stands in late July on a 97 degree day, with no impressive barometric pressure change and a half moon I think too. OH! And one of the guys was from Florida and never hunted coyote and the other was in the same boat as me being new to the terrain and environment. Nice snide comment but I’m missing the point of why? The area seemed pretty good if it can produce coyotes on a terrible day for calling like it was and maybe you only hunt the prime days but others just like getting out there and having fun. It’s grasslands, not a sheep farmers coyote plagued land. Who cares if they’ll be smarter next time because we will be too.

Thanks for sharing Tracker... all experiences, good, bad, fruitful or not, are
worth reading to glean information from.

Anyone who goes after coyotes and comes off insinuating they kill every
Coyote on every set?? Sure they do... uh huh

I never worry about educating coyotes on Public lands, in fact I go out in the off season and call them just to see them. I usually don't have a problem going back when they prime up and killing a few. Some of the places I hunt in WA get hammered pretty hard year round and they still come to the call when they prime up. I don't think the sounds spook them as much as getting shot at when they come to it., Many times If I get busted on a stand I can go back even the next day and call them in not so if I fire a shot.

Summer time is not “Pressured” time!

If you like going out there and having fun on a 90+ degree day that is bug and snake filled then by all means knock yourself out!

When late October - mid January are upon us and you are wondering why the Coyotes go the other way or don’t show then you will know!

Do whatever makes you happy, I choose to wait until the snakes and bugs are gone, I don’t have to wear a t-shirt and the Coyotes are worth up to $95 skinned, sewn and stretched.

Best of luck to you!

About 25 years ago I and friends used to go coyote hunting (just road hunting) on the Pawnee Grasslands. One time near a missile silo we saw a herd of muley bucks of which the smallest was a 4x4. There had to be twenty Boone & Crocket trophys in that herd. An amazing sight. Then we went to Bruce's for balls and beer.
Never saw many coyotes the way we hunted back then.

North,

The Pawnee and Comanche Grasslands are so overun with Target shooters and bird watchers in the summer is just crazy!

And then in the winter Months all the People that got a new FoxPro for Christmas are sitting on the hillsides waiting for 4 Coyotes to run in just like they see on TV....

The Grasslands are the areas that get beat up the most. I see quite a few Antelope, some Swift Fox and a few Mulies.
