Pelican case purchased....My "Review"...

Over the past two weeks, I've purchased 2 Pelican AR sized cases and cut the foam to fit the rifles. I can't say enough about the cases. Although they are PRICEY, I will not hesitate to put rifles in them and send them to the baggage handlers with confidence that they won't wreck my guns. The only thing that I feel like Pelican is lacking is the quality of their "Pelilocks" that I purchased afterwards. I wouldn't suggest them to anyone. They're a little "chincy" looking, and don't do the case justice.

As a side note to the lock issue, I noticed that even with the locks in place, the cases can still be opened 1.5" or so. Has anyone found a lock that fits these cases snugly and would prevent this?

Overall....I'm VERY pleased with these cases. (But boy, my pocketbook is still stinging) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My appreciations go out to the folks that suggested them to me. They're definitely everything that they are advertised to be. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

OK...HERE YOU GO MIKE. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif HERE ARE PICS OF THE DTECH. THE OTHER CASE IS CUT ALMOST THE SAME:

Hidalgo,

Can you post a picture or two. Also, don't the cases have to be unlocked to clear TSA?

Mike, according to TSA regulations, they MUST be locked. You are required at check-in to open them and allow them to be inspected, then personally lock them back up and retain the keys. TSA won't accept them unless they are locked. At least....that's what I have read off their website. I haven't flown with a rifle yet, so I can't say with absolute confidence that I'm correct, but I'm planning on doing it 3 times this year so maybe I'll find out then.

I KNEW somebody was going to ask me to get up off my butt and take some pics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a couple of pelican gun cases /and a bunch of the outher sizes to.
I am now getting /using srorm cases I think they are a better case. We are a dealer for both.

sanddude, the Storm case looked very good to me also. But we didn't have a dealer in this area so I could see it in person. I'll keep it in mind if I ever need to do this again. (I'm sure that somewhere down the road it'll happen)

Hidalgo...looking good!

Are you going to get some shootin' time in?

Well.....I got three trips planned, but looks like the first one has fallen through. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I'm hardly ever sick (been fortunate) but I had plans to go to Texas Monday....NOW I'm battling a bacterial infection, so it's NOT looking good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Hidalgo,
The cases look fantastic! Thanks for the pictures and hope you feel better. I've been sick on hunts but never had to postpone or cancel a hunt.

Next time just get some Buckley's. It will either cure ya, or kill ya. Both will feel about the same!

I was up in Canada hunting with Redfrog 3 or 4 years ago and got sick. His lovely wife suggested I take some Buckley's and I agreed. Wondered why the kids hung around waiting for me to take two spoons of the stuff!! I thought I was going to die, they hooped and hollered like they'd just seen the best show in a long time. Oh, on a side note, it worked!!

If you wind up not being able to make it on monday, as a Texan I say you are welcome here anytime. So don't sweat it, just get better.

O.K. Mike, I'll bite.....what is a Buckley and why did you put two spoons of one in your mouth? I'm thinking it must be some sort of northern thing and if kids gather around to watch a grown man eat one it must be foul tasting. Although, if it works I wouldn't mind being schooled on what this Buckley thing is.

Also, great looking rifle and case Hidalgo, I looked at one of those and when I saw the price, my wallet and certian parts of my anatomy both puckered. Congrats though, those are supposed to be some of the best.

Too Shaweet! I had the starlights and they hurt your fingers w/the latches. Where did you procure yours from and how bad approx did it leave the quote, "ole wallet stinging?"

Buckley's is a cure for everything elixir made in Canada. It's got a maple leaf on the bottle and after drinking the stuff, I'm convinced the maple leaf would have tasted better! But, it cured what ailed me!

I have carried my Sporting Clays shotguns for a couple of years with the Pelican case. I use standard old Master locks in the proper size.

DR, the two cheapest places I found them was Cabelas & MidwayUSA. When checking around for prices, make sure you figure in shipping charges. They varied almost $30 from place to place when I was checking. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I use TSA locks that way I don't have to personally be there for the inspection. They have a thing-a-ma-jig to open the locks. If the locks are some how opened with out that thingy, the locks have an indicator to state as such.

Lance, I thought about that also. But I WANT to have to be there if the case is opened. In other words...I'll be there when it is initially inspected...it shouldn't need opening after that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif I just don't like giving TSA "carte blanche" to the case. It isn't necessary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hidalgo:

Nice job cutting the foam. If you decide you do not want the rifle setting / resting on the scope, when held by the "suitcase handle", you can spin the foam 180 degrees. The scope would then be towards the opening.

Trust me, if you ever see someone else's demolished gun case and gun, you will be ecstatic about how much you paid to protect your rifles!

I use the same size case as the double shotgun case pictured, for my AR carbine.

Nice!!

Got to be better than the alluminium case I flew the first time with. It was opened up like a can of soup when I got to Texas, with the rifles fully exposed. Still suprized nobody slipped them out the end. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Once checked, it travels locked to your destination even if you transfer one or more times. The biggest sweat is wondering if you and your guns actually end up at the same destination. I would suggest having your name and address on the case in several locations including inside. That little leather tag has a tendency to get lost when they shove your luggage through the chipper/shredder on the way to the cargo hold! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

does that case only hold one gun?? or can another gun be put above or below that one?? also can you get more foam inserts so the case can carry other guns or combos of other guns just by changing out the foam

alot of guys talk about how good the tuff pak is, has anyone used one

The one I have (#1720) "might" be able to hold 2 ARs, but I didn't check. The larger case (#1750) would definitely hold 2 with no problem. But my main objective was to eliminate as much weight and bulkiness as possible and adequately protect the rifle. And besides.....my son now has his own case, and he can take care of his OWN rifle. No need for Dad to have to drag it around. He's big enough to deal with it himself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have seen additional foam sets available, but didn't pay much attention to them. So, YES, you can get them, but I have no idea about the expense.
