Help me out on this as i plan on trying my hand at mounting my own trophies, can i use regular table salt to salt hides? if not then what kind of salt do i use exactly?
Yes you can.
Non Iodized is recommended but I've not seen a bit of difference in my 12 years of tanning, as long as you don't use it in your pickling agents.
Sometimes it plays havoc with your PH levels, and some tanning agents will alter the color of the skin and hair if table salt is used when tanning.
If you plan on doing any number of hides or capes, using table salt will get to be expensive and a real pain. Go to a farm supply store and ask for their finest grade livestock salt. It's grade is closer to table salt than rock salt, but it's really just milled rock salt that hasn't been cleaned. Usually comes in 80# bags for $3-4 each. I plan for one bag per deer cape for two saltings, and 2-3 bags for an elk cape. Bought a big Rubbermaid tub that you use to store clothes beneath your bed and keep it half full of clean, new salt.
That's my wife's idea. Store summer clothes in those tubs during the winter, and winter clothes there in the summer. All I know is that I can never find my good clothes that are well worn, holy, and comfortable to wear. Also, those tubs are handy for salting deer capes without getting salt all over the shop.
