Pepper Spray vs Snakes

My wife is going to the cabin with some of her friends. As they may walk around in some hiking areas she may have the possibility to encounter snakes including Rattlers and Copperheads. There is also a possibility to encounter a bear. I was curious if spraying a snake with pepper spray would deter a snake.I am going to send her with a gun but she has lost some movement in her right arm. Don`t know if she would be able to hold a handgun steady anymore, since she can`t move her right arm high enough to get a good hold.

Get her some 'shot shells'. Hitting a snake in the head with a regular bullet is hard enough to do even if you are a good shot.

I know about snakeshot but the problem is she haas what is called a "Winged Scapiala". When I say she can`t move her arm I mean she now has a disability. If she were to put her arm straight down and try to extend her arm in front of her arm would only extend about 3 in above the waistline. Just curious if bearspray would be a deterrent if needed.

Have no idea. I do suggest that she work on shooting with her weak hand though, as she may have to one day.

I'm not too bad shooting rifles left handed as well as right (I'm predominantly right handed but with some ambidextrous abilities since birth), not as good with a pistol. Should work on it more myself.

Luckily she is left handed, so she can learn to shoot one handed . but she don`t have a lot of time to practice.

I've never heard of anyone using bear spray, pepper, on snakes. I know that they are totally different animals and probably the only way to know for sure is to try it. If the pepper based stuff don't work try a 100% strength ammonia. You also could maybe email the manufacturer of a bear spray and see what they have to say.

Hey man, the thing about snakes is if you see 'em you can avoid 'em, if you don't see 'em
they might bite you.....some rat shot is a good idea to carry, she needs to know how to work
the gun in any fashion load, unload, disassemble, reassemble, clean, or whatever it takes.

I will tell you this we had a copperhead infestation a few years ago during their breeding
season killed 7 within 2 weeks, I shot 1 with some brake cleaner that thing went plum
crazy striking at everthing as fast as he could. I cut his head off with a hoe......I'd
say pepper spray would have a simmilar effect......

Friend. If it were my wife I'd make her learn to shoot lefty if need be....and carry at least a
.357 or larger I think she could hit a bear if it were 4 feet from her even without some
practic, after all you may have only one chance in a life time to do this, Try not to let
it be the last thing you do.....practic drawing it and firing at a 12" circle at 6 feet
over and over untill it's natural, use .38s as to reduce recoil, carry mags in it and
hope she never has to draw it.....use hammerless so it dont hang up.

My wife is a natural at drawing and firing a gun, and she loves to shoot, she shot a 243 on her
last qualifying round, I'm so proud, and I sleep a little easier every night......I gave her
a 9mm on her birthday she teared up from joy.....Now that's my kinda woman.

Good luck too you and yours.......

I don't really know, maybe get one of those refillable compressed air spray cans and experiment with different nozzles until you find one that you like.

For ammonia all you need is a squirt gun.
Motorcyclists have used ammonia filled squirt guns against dogs for at least 60 years.

Got ahold of a manufacturer and talked to a chemist. He said in some independent testing (not by his company) that the bear spray showed it was effective. He stated that he wasn`t sure if it was the pepper or thafact that when it disperses from the can it`s very cold. He stated that it atomizes when it leaves the can. It has the same coldness as the gases in your car cooling systems. Bsically like the electronics cleaner. I am still going to have her take a firearm and a couple of cans of bear spray.

if thats the case you might as well use carb choke cleaner. that stuff really burns the eyes. i use b12 carb cleaner for wasps and hornets, it kills them as fast as any bee killer and is a bit cheaper.

I think i read somewhere a crook went to nab a purse
from a woman she peppered sprayed his eyes....he suied
and won because she had the pepper spray for the intention
on using on a person??????figures......Then another
woman done the same thing but used carb cleaner and
permantly damaged the perps eyes for life he suied and
lost because her husband left it in the car by accident
and that's what she found to defend herself????????
What do you think?????????
I've got it in my eyes its way worst than pepper spray.
I think if you got it in a bears eyes he's outa there...

Frankly, I can not believe that such a spray will help something, and the whole point is that if the snake decides to bite you, then it will do it blazingly, you will not have time to shoot it at him. Only if you do not excrete this liquid from the bottle in advance. Then maybe yes, and so you can try to use repellents, as one of the options.
