Phenom/Super Hogster App Connection Tips

Since the SH and Phenom have released I have answered a few questions for people who had difficulty getting the SH and Phenom to connect to their Super Hogster Android app. Here are some tips.

Step 1: Download the Super Hogster app from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: You need to turn on the wireless signal on your thermal. This is done by long-pressing the middle button and turning wireless on.

Step 3: Connecting to the wifi. Here is where the problems typically happen. First many people try to launch the app before connecting to the thermal's wifi. Your scope and Android device need to be connected (not just the wifi turned on).

Many people try this at home and have a ton of wireless signals including your home network which wants to take over the connection. First, put your Android Device into Airplane Mode. This seems to help. Then manually turn on wifi on the Android device and connect to the Hogster or Phenom wireless network. Password is 12345678. It will tell you there is no Internet Connection which is correct, because your thermal is not an Internet Router.

If it continues to drop your connection, you can forget the other wireless networks, or simply go to a location where there are no other wireless signals, but going into Airplane Mode usually solves most of the problems.

Step 4: Launch the Super Hogster App. It should know you are already connected to the wifi, and you will see your live scope view. From there, you can set the time, connect to see what files are on your thermal, etc.

The two most common issues I've seen have already been mentioned which are people not connecting to the thermal network, step 3, before trying to launch the application, or having their wireless disconnecting because of other wireless signals and getting errors or connection issues while viewing/downloading, etc.

I don't use the app often with the Super Hogster or Phenom. Whenever I have used it, the app has worked worked very well for me. The main reason why a lot of people want to use it is to download video and images, but a direct connection to a Windows PC is way faster.

Thanks Kirsch. I'll give it a try soon.

I saved some previous suggestions/instructions you provided some time ago. This still good?

For an iPhone specifically:

1) Install program FE File Explorer from App Store (free version should work)

2) Connect to the Hogster Wireless Network on the iphone

3) Launch FE File Explorer, click + and then click FTP, and you should see an option at the bottom that says Network Neighborhood. It shows 192.168.11.123. Select it and choose Guest (this is the Super Hogster).

4) You can see the folders and files on your Super Hogster. You can view the videos. You can click on the 3 periods on the right of a video, and save Copy To - Camera Roll.

5) Disconnect from the Hogster network, and the video or videos chosen will be in your camera roll.

6) Use your favorite app and share your video from your camera roll.

This is something I found with experimenting. This is not officially supported by Bering Optics, Night Goggles, etc. This is just one way this could be accomplished using the technology Bering has provided.

The steps you listed was what I’ve posted to download files for the iPhone where this post was for Bering’s official app for Android,

InfiRay Outdoors also has an iPhone and Android app some users have began to use. Both InfiRay and Bering devices have iRay sensors in them and the app appears to work reasonably well with the Super Hogster and Phenom. I have been warning people to be very careful using it, but Bering doesn’t seem too concerned. They do say use at your own risk. There is a firmware update option in the app. DO NOT DO THIS as the firmware is different. Bering does not plan to provide firmware updates in their app.

Here is where it gets a little interesting. If you use the InfiRay Outdoors app, and choose to record via your phone, you have an option to turn the microphone on in the app. The app uses the microphone of the device, while recording for those that want audio with your Super Hogster or Phenom. I have no idea if the video quality is as good, and again this is not a Bering app, so use at your own risk, but kind of neat. It worked on my iPhone but did not on my Android tablet. It bumped me out of the app, and the recording became damaged on the Android. I don't have an Android phone to test.

Bering is looking at releasing an iPhone app this year but I don’t believe they plan on it including all the features of the Android version.
