Phoenix, az hunting

Im in Phoenix for the week and was wondering if anyone lives in the area and knows where good public land is to hunt. I'm thinking about coming back next fall and staying for a few days and trying to kill a few grays and cats. Also, can you hunt at nite or daytime only? Any information would help guys.

Kyle,

Here is the listing based upon our research for night hunting in Arizona.......but make sure you look at the May 2012 hunting regulations booklet when it becomes available.

Night Hunting: Allowed for coyotes in designated game management units from March 1 through May 31 by shotguns shooting shot only, AZ hunting license required. Allowed for mountain lions in designated game management units year around with mandatory check in of lion kills. Allowed for racoons in designated game management units from Aug 1 to March 31. No night hunting is allowed for bobcats and foxes. Hunting is allowed by the use of artificial lights as long as the light is not shined from or attached to a vehicle.
Night Vision: Unknown. Please refer to the May 2012 hunting regulation booklet when it becomes available for the 2012-2013 season.

You may not need to go to public lands. Last year hunting with shotguns shooting shot was allowed within the city limits in the daytime. You need to be at least 1/4 mile away from buildings to shoot. Open areas do NOT include areas within municipal parks, municipal preserves, county parks, county preserves, airports, golf courses, or posted water treatment facilities. Some areas within Phoenix are also closed.

I suggest going to the AZ Game and Fish Dept office (on Carefree Road about 2 miles west of I-17) and ask them about hunting coyotes on the south side of Carefree Road adjacent to the AGFD office. There is a large area across the street from the AGFD office that was just opened to hunting for the first time ever last summer and very few people know that area is now open. While you are there, you may need to get yourself a 4-day nonresident hunting license to hunt coyotes this week. Hunting coyotes near urban areas with a shotgun could be better than hunting on public lands anyway.

Good luck!
