Pizza Hut Anti-Gun?

An Iowa state senator has vowed to stop buying Pizza Hut products if the chain fires a Des Moines delivery man who shot a teen who tried to rob him last week.

Sen. Brad Zaun, R-Urbandale, told other lawmakers that he supports the delivery man, James William Spiers, according to a report in the Des Moines Register.

"I think what he did was the right thing," Zaun said Tuesday. "If I was in a situation to protect my family, protect myself, to continue being a father, I would’ve done the same thing."

The chain has suspended Spiers pending an investigation, the Register reports.

"We have policy against carrying weapons," Vonnie Walbert, vice president of human resources at Pizza Hut's corporate offices in Dallas told the paper for a March 28 story. "We prohibit employees from carrying guns because we believe that that is the safest for everybody."

But Zaun thinks Spiers, who had a permit to carry the concealed weapon, was well within his rights when he fired the shots March 27, so Zaun is "going to be watching Pizza Hut."

Kenneth Jimmerson, 19, who was hit with three bullets, called 911 for medical help and subsequently was arrested on a charge of first-degree robbery.

How stupid, Im emailing pizza hut to tell them I will never purchase fromt hem again if they fire him. Id we all sent emails, they would change their policy.

It isn't necessarily an anti gun statement but a question of liability. If Pizza Huts driver shoots someone Pizza Hut is going to have some responsibility in that shooting.

It is possible that they may not be able to find and insurance carrier who will cover them with out the "no Carry" clause.

I'm don't agree with it, actually it sucks but it is the companies perogitive. I have yet to see a bank that will allow employees to conceal carry while on the job.

Pizza Hut drivers are private contractors are they not? Otherwise why doesn't Pizza Hut provide autos and auto insurance to it's "employees"

In NC it's against the law to carry in a financial institution. Even, with a concealed carry permit.

If anybody wants to boycott and notify Pizza Hut over this why didn't you do it years ago for them selling crappy pizza and we wouldn't have this issue with them?

While I don't agree with it because delivering pizzas is probably not the safest of jobs but at the end of the day the employer has the right to hire who they want and have them do what they want. This is not an assult on the 2nd Admendment. I know likely some will come in chest thumping that this view is an anti's point but it's not. The 2nd has nothing to do with employment. Of course I also don't feel that if you hire somebody they should get the full extent of the 1st either.

Bottom line is let Pizza Hut run out of drivers because they can't pack and nobody will do it anymore. That will effect the bottom line and is the only thing that will get through to them.

I'm in the Marine Corps and I can't take my .45 to work, with or without a concealed permit.

Who really cares? The driver broke company policy, right or wrong he should be repremanded for his actions.

Pizza Hut isn't ANTI-GUN, they are ANTI-STUPID DRIVERS.

Its really no different than those companys that wont let you keep a firearm in your car on their property. Policy being policy I would carry a fish wacker in my back pocket.

I hope the thief gets time, and the driver gets cleared. If he looses a pizza delivery job over it.......well things could be worse.

I'm not sure if Pizza Hut drivers are private contractors or not, honestly I have never worked as a pizza delivery guy. But as the contractor Pizza Hut can establish rules their subs have to go by if they wish to stay in their employment. As for the car and insurance an employeer isn't required to provided those to an employee if that is part of the initial agreement. They may provide reimbursement for mileage and usage.

My job is much like the Pizza Guys. It takes me to the worse neighborhoods and I am often face to face with people repossessing a car, shutting down a business or foreclosing on a home. My bank does not have a policy about firearms however if I had to use one on the job I am sure I'd be seeking employment else where the next day. It's one of them don't ask don't tell things. Also there is no state law in Virginia that prevents a person, employee or customer, from bringing a firearm in the building. There may be a federal law or Virginia may have changed that and it is not update on the State Police website yet jsut for FYI. Virgina aslo offer resciprotisty to any CCW holder in state adjoining it's borders.

Like I said I aint agreeing with Pizza Huts policies I just don't think they are anti gun in nature, stricly PR and business related.

Now if I was the delivery guy and got robbed and was and employee of Pizza Hut I would sue them for not protecting me on the job. May not go far but if nothing else you open the door to fix the situation.

He must of had a better job or been related to a sheriff to get a permit to carry in Iowa. We had a drunken looser neighbor cut up his wife up one night and got away with it as a domestic because she said she accidently cut herself but I heard the screaming word for word. I was working second shift and called the sheriff's department about my wife protecting herself at home with two young kids with a gun when I was gone. They said you could only use like force. Meaning if the fool only has a knife you can only use a knife. Judged by 12 or carried by 6 is the way I look at it. This state is way to liberal.

It sucks. I believe Iowa is, like Maryland, one of the few "duty to retreat" states as opposed to the common sense "Castle Doctrine" in which under far more circumstances you can use lethal force to repel and invader from your home or place of business.

If the driver loses his job its because of company policy. At least he is still alive to pursue happiness in another job. I would say he did what he is supposed to do, his duty of self-preservation. Move on & be thankful that you had the sense to do your duty.
As far as the perpetrator, Fugem!

I'd boycott but I've already been banned by our local PH... Had an Idiot driver that couldn't find our house, called the wrong # and was yelled at that they didn't order any pizza (after 3rd call) and when I got ahold of the Mgr I was told that the driver feared for his life and I would have to meet him outside my house. After the delivery he was standing outside his truck (which was in the middle of the street) and talking on the phone. I called Mgr back and told her that if he didn't leave I would call cops for him harassing my family. Find out he locked his keys in truck!!!

I know not all drivers are as brilliant as ours but I'm glad ours wasn't carrying (that I know of). I don't think he is stable enough to be trusted with a pizza much less a weapon.

Sounds like the guy might make a better LEO than a delivery man. What ever the outcome the guy can certianly do better than pizza hut. I like his attitude and decison making skills under pressure!
