Place to hunt in North Dakota

I am active duty USN currently stationed in Milwaukee, WI. My family and I are planning a trip to Yellowstone this summer. We will be driving through ND and spending a day or two in the Theodore Roosevelt Natl Park. I would like to take a day and coyote hunt while I am out in the area. Any recommendations for places along Interstate 94 where a fellow could spend a day hunting coyotes? I may also have a day on the return trip while in WY. We will be going through Casper.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

Get a National forest map of the area. It will show all the public land and there is a lot of it on both sides of 94. I don’t believe it is as good as it once was, not saying it’s bad. The oil boom brought in hundreds of people just looking to shoot anything that moved. Between being somewhat remote and in ND if land is not posted you are free to trespass. We have gotten by with it for about 150 years but the outsiders abused the privilege and locals are not as cooperative as they once were. Get away from the main traffic and you should be able to get a few, Prarie dogs are an option as well. Thanks for your service, spent mine in the Marines, my son retires Dec1 after 24 years Navy Jag

The Interstate across ND, MT all have barbed wire on both sides of the highway for about 1000 miles. Your land and mine. Good luck getting access.

That wire is hiway dept wire, has nothing to do with landowner other than hiway dept is the owner and in ND you can shoot from the hiway, may not be a good idea but legal to shoot from but not across, doesn’t not include township roads.

Thank you Parson. I will see if I can get a map of the area. So far I have been using what is available from ND DNR but it is difficult to see details on those maps.

There is a interstate between ND and Montana that is 1,000 miles long?

Born and raised to n Williston, never saw an interstate until I got to Dickinson.

?????

Get the On X map for ND installed on your GPS, phone, tablet etc and you will have all ownership state & private with names for entire state. That way you will know where you are at all times.

That way you will know where you are at all times. ONX does not have ownership for the entire state. There are many counties that do not have digital data. They have some counties but not all. Also, just because you have a name doesn't mean you have any idea how to get in touch with the land owner. TRAX maps (NDTRAX for North Dakota) for Garmin GPS units actually has more private land data than ONXmaps for ND, and includes phone numbers for 60% of records. I know because I created them.

Yes you can shoot from a highway but not the Interstate. You can't shoot from it or even park along side of it for hunting. Also, just because you can shoot from/off a road, you still can't legally shoot into any property that is posted.

Here's a rule I don't understand. I have been told directly from a game warden, it is legal to shoot from a window of a vehicle as long as the vehicle is stopped for coyotes and the coyote is on non-posted ground or you have permission on that property. They don't allow you to chase the coyote. Here is my question. The law in ND states, you can't have a loaded weapon in a vehicle. How can you shoot out of the window from a stopped vehicle, without loading your weapon? I still haven't figured that one out.

If you are out in the Theodore Roosevelt Natl Park, you are in one of the areas of the state with the most public land (Little Missouri Grasslands) as well as very good coyote habitat. It just depends on the time of the year how accessible roads are. Get a NDTRAX Garmin map (or ONXmap as discussed above) so you can have the public land and private information available, and have fun.
