Planning a 20/222. Ideas Welcome

I am in the planning stages of building a 20/222. I would like something (if this is possible) to be a light walking rifle, but may also use if I ever get the chance for PD's or sage rats. I will not be using this rifle for long, hot strings of fire.

I have a few specific questions I am hoping someone can chime in and help me out.

1. I would like for this to be a repeater. Will a BDL set up work or will det mag system feed better?

2. I assume 24" barrel would be the minimum

3. If I wanted to shoot the 35 gr Berger bullets, which twist would be best suited for that weight bullet

4. What is the best solutions for dies, both seater and sizing

My wish list so far would include (please feel free to offer suggestions)

Mcmillan or Manners Lightweight stock
Stiller Action
Krieger barrel, I was thinking about a #4 sporter fluted
Jewell trigger

Any ideas, suggestions or comments would be appreciated

I would recommend a 20 Tactical or a 20 Practical.
Both use the 223 case, and cases are cheaper to make either.

Get a 11" or 10" twist, cuz there are a fair number of bullets that are marginal with the 12".

24" or 26" will be fine.

(the 22/222 is NOT the 204)

But with the 20/222 you can use lapua brass. That's a big plus IMHO. This is going to be a fun round. I just got a brand new unfired REM 700 SA .223 boltface. Guess I know what its going to eventually be!

Lapua also makes .223 brass... and it is easier to get and always available - the 222 Lapua is not a solid supply (they make it when they feel like it).

It's in stock right now at powder valley and the exact same price as 223 . Guess I will buy a few hundred and then I can breath easier!

Right you are CatShooter. Good point. I just know it isn't a mainstream caliber.

I think there is some confusion here....the .222 Remington is a smaller cartridge case than the .223 Remington. The .222 Remington Magnum is larger than the .223 Remington.

I want one because its different.

I have a 204 and have some 223 round guns

I just wanted one. I'm sure other rounds may be more readily available.

I like being different I guess

Thanks pcammo I was thinking my post didn't look right. I was thinking one thing and typing another.

20/222's a sweetheart for sure.
If it were me, I'd find an old Sako Vixen action to build on. That action was designed around the 222 and is the best small cal action ever made IMO.
There's still some Post-Garcia Vixen's around that can be had at a fair price since they're not as collectible as the Pre-Garcia's.

Luck

You are right there on the older sako vixen actions. Mine will be built off a M700 cause I was recently able to pic up a new unfired one for $375. Bolt will head off to Karl Kampfeld to get tricked out and cerakoted!

Yea,,, I like's my 700's too.
I'm actually in the middle of a low budget (if there is such a thing) 222 build on a 700 and Walnut Boyds stock.

I'was just thinking about Buster starting from scratch would probably be better served and save a few bucks with an old Vixen.
Kimber 84's a goodun for a lightweight walking varminter too, but I'd choose the old Sako over it if I could find one.

My favorite walking varminter's built on a CZ527.
Lots of good choices out there and I like em all. (Well almost.) HA

The .20 practical would be more "practical" but since you have some .223's already the .20-222 would be a safer bet.

(With .223's under your roof, it's nettlesome if you get it and the .20 practical ammo mixed up.)

I recently added the .204 to my arsenal and it's a RIPPER!!!

As far as walking rifles, there is no better than the 527 CZ!! (I have one in .223)

I have already ordered a Stiller action for this project.

if CZ didn't have that bassackwards safety, I'd prolly own one. Sounds silly, but that alone is a deal breaker for me...

Why the Sako extractor option on the 700, Rob?
