Playing with an Oldy

I picked up a pretty rare little(well not so little) B&L Balvar scope, yes one of the original Balvar's a 2.5-4x20 variable that is around 65 yrs old. Finding rings and bases and be hard for these od timers as they had no internal windage and elevation adjustments. This one has a fine crosshair and about a 2-3 min. dot that does tend to look more like a semi-round blob than the nice round dots I'm accustom to. the glass is amazingly clear. I solve the problem of the rings and bases with Leupold standard mounts that let you adjust windage with the rear ring clamp screws and then adjust elevation with shims in the front or rear ring. I had no problem keeping my shots in a 3" circle at 200 yards. Well under minute of coyote.

I mounted it on a Rem 600 in 6x45, now to find a cooperative coyote.

I have a couple of old Balvar 8's, I use one on a old flat-top Savage in 22-250. It shoot good enough that I shot it in the PM Egg shoot and got to the third round and missed that egg, shooter error. I did stop on the way back to camp and killed a coyote with it. It is a solid set up that I nicknamed "The Turret Twisters Nightmare", I get some really strange looks when they notice it doesn't have windage or elevation turrets.

I really like hunting with old firearms and early tech.
