I need your help in choosing a new scope for my new Savage .223. This rifle will mainly be used for hunting ground squirrels and I could only spent about $200. Thanks

Scott,

Welcome to the board. How far do you plan to shoot at these ground squirrels and is this all you plan to use this for? What model Savage do you have and does it have the accu-trigger? I have the FV12 model in 22-250 and I use it mostly for Prairie Dogs and shooting paper targets. I currently have a Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 with Mil-dot on it. It is a fantastic scope. I find that it gives me just enough magnification without being too much for the closeup shots. Plus it doesn't have an Adjustable Objective so I don't waste time trying to get a clear picture, its already clear. I paid $180 on www.midwayusa.com . The 3200's have a very clear picture and rainguard for those not so sunny days or even the colder days so your breath doesn't fog it up.

How about a Simmons WTC 18 (6.5x20x50)? They are on closeout at SWFA for $99. Pretty descent scope with high magnification for those squirrels.

Dave,

I plan to shoot to about 300 yards and it will also be used for target shooting. The rifle is a Savage 10FP with the accu-tigger. I will look into the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 w/Mil-dot. Thanks

Mike, Thanks for the welcome.

Onestar, I had only one Simmon's scope in the past and it didn't really hold up to well, so that kind of turned me away from them.

Scott,

I bought a 4-14x50 A.O. Bushnell "scopechief" from Natchez I think I paid a little less than 200. I think it is one of the best scopes I have ever owned.

This response will create some controversy, and that's OK. I have two Tasco Target-Varmint scopes, they may go by World Class, I can't remember. 6-24x40 and 4-10x40 both AO, both under $100. The reports say they are underrated, and I agree. I don't have a great deal of field experience with them, so can't attest to their light-gahtering, but they are fully coated.

Also,I have dealt with Optics Planet, and have been very impressed with their service and variety of scopes - take a look at their site.

Good Luck.

My two cent's worth, buy a used Leupold. An older Vari X II is still a lot of scope, and you should be able to get one at $200. Also, you will find it is still what you paid for it, or even more, 5 years later. There are the 3 - 9 variables, very common, and the fixed 8 and 12 power scopes. Good luck.

Bushnell 3200 Elite are great scopes for the money I have been learning how to use the mil-dot reticle, you"ll be impressed how well you can shoot with mil-dot or a tatical scope with the hash marks. The Savage is a great gun it usually shoots better than most all shooters. The 22-250 with accu-trigger is my next gun with a 8-16x on top.

I think it'll run you more than $200. but have you considered the Bushnell (Bausch & Lomb) Elite 4400? It's an excellent scope, very clear optics. I bought one last year in 6x24 and am delighted with it. Currently prices are low on them, but that won't last. Just be sure to avoid
the scopes, Bushnell and otherwise, that are made in China. There's a lot of unhappiness with the Chinese made optics. I had a Bushnell Sportsman and a Sportview, both in 4x12 and neither survived its initial trip to the range. The Banner 6x18 is made in Taiwan or Formosa and is quite good. Best wishes.

For the money you are talking about, I would look into the Bushnell Elite's 3200 or 4200. Glass is real good but they don't have a very large adjustment range for windage/elevation.

Would think you would need more that 10X at 300 for a gound squirrel. Think a 5-15 or 6-24 would fit this task well.

Scott,
Last summer natchezz closed out on Bushenell scope cheifs, origenally 300 and change for 189. If you watch the classifieds on various boards used ones are starting to turn up. I bought a 6.5-20 and wish I would have boughten more. Great scope for the money. Very clear and the tracking is dead on. I don't think its as clear as my buddies Leupold VX3 but for the money I don't think it can be beat.
