i am just getting into hunting coons with hounds and i am getting a dog this week no matter what..but i kind of need some advice..i have a chance to get a plott/bluetick 4 month old pup for free or a 1 yr old black and tan for 50 bucks cause he just dont have room for him and the dog has had no training...they are both males...what would you guys do? what would make a better coon dog? im just really really new at this and dont know much..thanks guys

Don't know if you have any experience with dogs but you will have to get him vaccinated if he doesn't have his shot's up to date. I just spent $80 on my lab for her 6 month shot's rabies, lymes and something else. Just remember looking for the right pup for you is a lot of fun so look around and do some research on them all and good luck.

I am new to hounds so I will not comment on which breed, but here is a tip as far as shots are concered go to a local Coop or some tipe of ag store and you can by shots that you can give your dogs for $5 or so bucks. I think most have a paper saying at waht age to give what shot and how to give the shot. I would call the ag stores before hand.

I know I said I would'nt comment but both dogs should work fine on coon. By the way whats your coon season in utah? In colorado its basicly the same as bobcat but starts in November instead of December both end in Febuary.

Good luck,Gabe

Bryce, Two coonhound pups are easier to train than one, they encourage each other. Get you a live coon to tease them with. Keep it in a cage and tease them into fighting and treeing it, keeping it in the cage. Dont let the young ones get whipped by the coon or they will be set back for a while. Some use a round cage that will roll on the ground. Coon will growl and fight through the wire and get pups all excited. Haul cage up a tree and encourage pups to tree. Wet coon down so he will leave some scent on tree trunk. Once you start working them you will have to keep them in a pen ro chain or they will go hunting by themselves and get into trouble. After a couple of weeks of teasing, take them to the river bottom and spotlight a coon for them. Tie hounds up and have a knock out race. You climbing a tree and tieing pups up make them tree harder. You dont have to kill every coon to make good coon dogs. More knock out races you have the better your dogs will get. The more you tie them back, the harder on the tree they want to bark. Now We're talking about several months of this. Be patient, not all races go like you want, especially with young dogs.I would not turn them loose to strike their own coon until they could tree their own knock-out races. You can save some time by finding another hunter with an already trained older hound. Hounds learn from each other quickly. Lots of good internet forums on coon hunting also. You better be married to a good woman, too!! Have fun with those pups.
