POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

I was just reading a post and it got me thinking. I own a Winchester 30-06 Classic Stainless that rarely makes it out of the safe and have been considering selling it to go to a 25-06 so that I can use it for coyotes with some lighter grain bullets and still have something for taking a trip out west to use on mulies or antelope. Never even considered having it rebarreled to 25-06 until I just read a post. I am completely clueless on how this would work or if it's even cost effective compared to just getting a completely different rifle. Can you guys help me out? Where would I even start to find out what this would cost me and what companies would you reccommend me contacting? I have posted a pic of my 30-06. Thanks

Call a gunsmith. Generally a high quality match SS barrels will run around 250-350 depending on the maker and how long you want to wait. Other than that, most smith's will charge you $100-150 to remove your old barrel, thread and chamber a new one.

Heck for a hunting rifle I've seen plenty or ER shaw barrels that would shoout well under 3/4" groups with suitable loads.

Barrel countour will make a huge difference in the weight of the gun itself. If you are looking for an ultralight sporter you will want a light contour, if its more of a stand gun a 5 or heavier would be suitable.

Twist is all dependent on what bullet weights you plan on running.

Wise choice on a .25-06, I've had one forever. Advice is good. I had my Remington rebarreled about 3 years ago. Found a local smith that builds rifles and went with a Krieger barrel. The price was somewhere around $400. I now have a super accurate rifle that cleans up with 2 patches.

I would keep that baby and hunt with it.

I used to own one in 7mm mag, but mine was walnut. My good bud still has a walnut version in 30-06.

If you do rebarrel, keep in mind, if you change the countour of the barrel to a larger one, as in not an exact factory duplicate, you will probably have to buy a new stock to go with it. Those factory tupperware stocks do not leave much room for play and really probably not worth messing with anyway. Removing material will only make them less rigid than they already are. Not to mention, that stock will not look right with a heavier tube in it anyway, IMO. And the rifle will not balance well either, IMO.

If you do rebarrel, let me know and I'll see if my bud will buy your 30-06 barrel.

Personally, I'd keep it and buy a 243.....

Because we don't know what else is in the safe, or if you handload, or your budget, my first thought would be, if you load, to just load up some 125 Ballistic Tips for the coyotes, which still leaves you for a hammer for the bigger stuff. A 25 isn't going to be fur friendly regardless, so you might as well hit 'em with a 30.

Ain't no flies on an 06 for an all arounder for mice to moose.....

Alf, lets just say I were to load some 125 ballistic tips, how would you sight the gun in as far as say shooting a target at 100 yards? One inch high or two inches high would be the max, I would think! I guess I'd just have to play around with it, but I do get alot of closer shots when calling that are anywhere from 50-100 yards. But then I also get the ocassional 200-250 yard shot. I have mostly hunted coyotes with my 204 over the last few years but I'm just wanting to get the 30-06 out and use it! That's why I was considering the 25-06, because I thought maybe I'd use it a little more often. Also, I have always kicked around the idea of loading the 30-06 with some sabots so that I could load them with .224 bullets, but have only heard negative results from guys that have tried it.

I would keep it and buy a new one. A while back I was going to do the trade/sell/re-bbl thing to change things up and instead I bought a new to me rifle. I just hate watching one of my firearms get away....sellers remorse sets in and then so does regret.....JMO

I agree with keeping the 30-06 BUT maybe buy yourself a 25 WSSM. You can shoot deer and antelope and then go predator hunting with it. That way just incase you have any plans to come out here to Colorado you can still have your elk gun to shoot.

I just ran into this problem with my 270. So finally I just started reloading and I'm just doing a lot of practicing with it. Seems to be working so far... Maybe when I get a chance to use it I'll be fully polished up with it..

JJH gave you good advise...I would go with a douglas or schillin (spel?) barrel. I wouldn't use a er-shaw barrel for anything but a trolling wieght. You must not care about fur...cause a 25-06 is going to make some big holes in a yote!

That's, OK, it keeps them cheaper for the rest of us. I have seen some ER's that will shoot in the .3's. They are all made by major barrel makers, and are better than most if not all factory barrels.

I would just send it in to the barrel mfg. of choice. As stated there are many good quality barrels. Many people like krieger. I am just getting started with my krieger experience. So far it looks promising. Good luck

One thing to keep in mind, some gunsmiths don't like to work on the Controlled round feed model 70s. Extra work to fit the extractor/breech end of the new bbl.

To solve all these "serious problems", sell the rifle to me and buy something more satisfactory.
