Im getting ready to load some rounds for my 250. Its a heavy stainless barrel Win mod 70 coyote. I believe its a 1/14 twist. The only .224 bullets I have are 55gr Vmax. Powders I have are IMR4064,, IMR3031,,WIn748,, LIL GUN,, Alliant 2400,,IMR4227,, H110,, and Unique.WHich one of these powders would you reccommend? ANy help appreciated. Also would you think somewhat lower than max charges would be best for accuracy? Seems like thats what I always found to be true when I use to reload.

Im using 4064 in a couple other calibers and it seems like a really good powder. Glad I got 4 pounds before the hoarding got full blown. ANy others that would work well or just stick with the 4064 and play around with charge weights?

IMR 3031 is a very versatile powder and would work. But to be honest if you want the best performance and velocity out of the great 22-250 I would grab some CFE223 or Varget. But with power you have the 3031 or 4064 can work

4064 is really the only usable powder you listed for the 22-250. You could use 748 in a pinch but its not typically a 22-250 powder. FWIW, I use XMR 4064 myself.

Thanks guys.ANother question. The mod 70 is 1/14 I believe. Are the 55 gr v max my best bet or can I shoot heavier in this twist to help with wind on long shots? Im only talking 300 yards or maybe a little more.

I had a Savage Model 12 22-250 that shot 3/8" easily with 4064 and a Berger 52 MEF. 1/14 is pretty slow, I'd work in the 40-52 grain range. Try some 55s if you have them, but I wouldn't go out and buy them for this gun.

A 55gr pill is as big as my 22-250 will push with consistancy. It too has a 1:14TR......I use 34gr of Benchmark for my reloads.

Rifleman,

Is there a reason your reloading those so slow. You're not getting near the performance you could out of your 22-250 especially with a 26" barrel. You should be getting close to 3700 fps and probably even more out of that 22-250. Hodgdon lists 34 grains as starting and 36.3 as max with 4064.

Maybe that's where his gun likes it nothing wrong with having something a little slow if it drives tacks, I have a 257 that will push 100 grain pills at 3500 fps but it will drive nails at around 3300 so that's where it lives

Not really, I think it is somewhat because it doesn't have the coating like Hogdens powder does but I think since its a stick powder it helps it not be as bad as say h380
