Prairie Dogs in Canada!!

Has anyone hunted in PD’s in Canada? I just talked to Brent Mitchell up in Canada. He says the PD population is out of this world. I told him I would spread the word. His phone # is 306-445-4147 and e-mail sb.Mitchell@sasktek.net. I am going to try to plan a trip there soon. I have seen the personal PD videos he has and they are wild. It seems to me that you would have all day shooting under a hundred yards. Thanks, Dave.

Brent charges $300 a day, he provides: Rooms, Meals, Guide, and shooting benches and/or huts to shoot from, he also reimburses the $50 border fees. His camp is located 5 hours north of Montana. Give him a call he is a great guy,
306-445-4147 or email sbmitchell@sasktel.net .
I had the e-mail wrong in the first post, this one is correct.
Thanks, Dave.

The prairie dog situation is pretty good in Canada in lower Saskatchewan and lower Alberta. I just started shooting them last season but the populations seem pretty good and we have annual tournaments were people shoot 10 to 15 thousand over a 3 month period.

Up here, people seem less inclined to shoot prairie dogs as our neighbours to the south do. Farmers and ranchers definately shoot as many as them as possible but we don't have the dedicated "pdog" shooters as your country does.

When I tell people that I am going south to shoot dogs with a 223 or 22-250, they have never heard of people doing that. So my recommendation is to come on up and give it a whirl. With the way your dollar is valued to ours, it is definately worth the trip!

Greg,

Where abouts did you shoot Prairie Dogs. I've heard there around but I've never seen any. I went to Maple Creek last year to get in to some heavier population of gophers. You tend to get some weird looks if your not useing a .22 with the cheapest bulk ammo. But when at the gun shops you come across more guys into shooting them with Centerfire rifles.

PrairieHunter,

I have been shooting mainly on the Alberta side around Hanna and South but I have seen lots around Medicine Hat. I have shot them in Saskatchewan around North Battleford and I have a friend that use to live in Swift Current that shot and said there was lots there. I was listening to the CBC one day about the I think Ken Turkot Memorial shoot that is in both provinces and a lady from around Maple Creek said the fields at her farm looked like the were moving because there were so many.

Now, I don't know if they are gophers technically or Pdogs or richardson ground squirels but I do know they are fun to shoot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I like to hunt in central manitoba and really there are only gophers there. What month do gophers/praire dogs start coming out of their holes?

Looks like we have some Saskatchewan shooters!

I've been looking around on the net for some locations to shoot prairie dogs ( actual PD towns ) in SK. I'm new to shooting, so if anybody could help out, that would be great.

I hear almost all the dog towns are in the Grasslands National Park. I'm assuming it's illegal to shoot there?

We live little town called Claresholm Alberta with prairie dog population is more what towns human population lol. . It's become so bad with rodent that they just started take over our backyard. Holes are everywhere in front yard, backyard as well. There's an small open field that just off Hwy 2 . Don't know what to do about the rodent take over. Some help or direction would be helpful.
