Predator calls for Javelina

Formula 409

I'v hunted for Javelina on three different occasions, southern AZ. All three times I'v used a 22.250 rifle.

I'm planning a hunt in Feb.'02 with my 44. I know there are Javelina calls available but will a predator call work as well.

I believe that Javelina calls are to mimic a herd member in distress.

Any comments would be appreciated.

First of all,

Welcome to Predator Masters. We are glad to have you here.

Now for your question. Javalina's will respond to the distress calls of their young very readily. As far as which call you need to use it is really up to you. I have Javalina calls and other calls with enclosed reeds. They are EXACTLY the same call. Reeds are the same and the bodies are the same. Use what you already have and go kill some Javo's.

This has been touched on before on, I believe, other boards (Posse Country, the Shade Tree etc.). Several people and even some call manufacturers have openly said that there is no differance between a cottontail rabbit distress call and a Javelina call. Well there is a differance, the sticker says that you are the proud owner of a Javelina call. You can't blame the call manufacturers, if hunters absolutely know that a special built Javelina call is needed then it is up to the manufacturer to fill the bill (and I might add sell another call).

Just for the record, I have called in more of the little rodents with a Lohman jack rabbit enclosed reed than with all others combined. Why ? I havent a clue, but it is a very raspy gurgly sounding call.

It has gotten a little exciting a few times !

Craig is right. I've used the enclosed reed Lohman jackrabbit to call in lots of the little buggers. When they come in it can get up close and personal real quick, too!

Thanks for the input. Up close with a handgun would defenitley be exciting.

I've only hunted the 36-C area, pretty good success. That is some of the best looking country I've ever seen.

Formula 409,

Over the years I have had Javalina respond to many different predator calls. The Johnny Stewart PC-3 was my favorite for many years. Both the CrittrCall Peewee and Standard have worked. Many of the "bite" calls, the Modern call, Fred Cronk's bite call and the Sceery AP-6 have called Javalina. A long time ago the Circe Long Range Jackrabbit worked. I once had a Lohman Javalina call, it never did call a Javalina, then I lost it. If I hadn't lost it I am sure sooner or later it would have produced also.

My belief today is if there are Javalina within hearing distance some part of the herd will respond to the call, most of the time. I have seen a herd of Javalina before starting to call and everyone of them ran as hard as they could out of the area.
