Predator Hunting in Idaho??

I have a question for anyone who might be familiar with the Predator Hunting Licence Fees in Idaho.

I am asking this because I just spoke with a representative from Idaho Fish and Game and his response to my inquiry about a "short term" non-resident licenses for predators was, "We have no such license, you must purchase a full year, non-resident license for $141.50!! WOW , that seems very high to me, especially since they do not offer an out of state 3 or 4 day tag. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I really wanted to hunt with Duyxdog this November, but $141.50 seems a bit steep for two or three days. (Thanks in advance!)

That would be be their hunting license and is good for coyotes Aug- First of January. Then Jan. to Aug. you can buy the non game license for about $38 and hunt them. I have checked into it a couple times. I have a hard time paying that kind of money to go hunt coyotes a couple of times.

That is correct information. To purchase a hunting license you have to pay the $141.50. If you plan on hunting January 1st through August 31st you also have to purchase the Nongame Hunting License. This license costs $29.25 That is what I used to do when I lived in Utah.

Thanks to both of you for the information on the predator hunting license situation in Idaho. I guess it doesn't take a "rocket surgeon" to figue out that I will be postponing my trip to Idaho until after January 1st.

Thanks again,

Rusty,
I think, if I'm understanding this correctly, it is cheaper to go in November. I don't think you have to purchase the Nongame License in November. That would save you the $30. I had to edit my previous post because I had it all wrong. Here is how it's stated in regs,

I don't know if you CAN'T hunt nongame animals Sept.-Dec. or if you simply don't need the Nongame License. You better make some more phone calls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Rick, when are you planning on being here in Utah? Maybe we can hook up and do some hunting? Seeing how I haven't made it up to Washington yet.

Let me know!

Actually you can buy the small game licence for $85. This also allows you to hunt upland birds. You just have to wait out the first 5 days of phesants.

My cousin moved to Boise, Idaho and just gave me an open invite to stay at his house if I want to fly up and hunt. I assume the coyote hunting is still good after January 1, and the snow is not too bad??

Outdoorjoe,

You'll love January in Idaho...it's just like September through June in Rochester. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Seriously though, there will hopefully be plenty of snow, but you will be able to hunt. We don't get much on the ground in Boise even in good snow years. Make sure and practice your shooting though our dogs are similar to yours only much smaller.

You don't want to hunt in Idaho. There aren't any dogs here. You'd be much better off in some other state. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is a letter I sent to the Idaho fish and game last year on this subject.

I am a nonresident that loves to hunt in Idaho. I have bought a regular nonresident hunting license for the last 22 years. This year, 2006, I knew that I had no plans to hunt big game in Idaho so I figured that I would save a little money on a hunting license and purchase a small game license. Big Mistake on my part I guess. You may wonder why this would be a mistake if I had no intentions of hunting big game. Well it was recently pointed out to me that a small game license is not valid for coyotes and jackrabbits. And while I love to hunt upland game birds I would rather hunt coyotes. So I made the big mistake of purchasing a small game license assuming that it would cover small game and unprotected and predatory wildlife. I didn't read the fine print before purchasing the license. Now I am starting my Christmas break a time that in years past I would have spent several days in Idaho hunting coyotes but I guess this year it looks like Idaho is not an option, because I can't justify buying the regular hunting license on top of my small game license for a couple of weeks of hunting. I don't understand why a small game license would not be valid for unprotected and predatory wildlife. Will someone please explain to me why coyotes are not legal to hunt with a small game license? Why has Idaho somewhat protected Coyotes by selling small game licenses and prohibits those license holders from hunting Coyotes. I thought the fish and game would appreciate someone harvesting a predator such as a coyote. I never figured the fish and game would want to protect them by selling a hunting license that made it illegal to shoot one. I tried to clarify what the proclamation says about a small game license by looking at Idaho's statues, I have looked and looked through the statues and can not find a small game license. There is a two day small game license in the statues. So is there really such a thing as a small game license were it is not listed in the Idaho statues? I would appreciate an answer to the questions above. It would really make my day to find out that I could hunt coyotes with a small game license. Thank you for your time.

Here is the response:

You are correct that the small game license is not valid for shooting coyotes. I am as mystified as you as to the reason for this and will bring it to the attention of the Commissioners with a recommendation we run legislation to rectify this situation. Believe it or not, this is the first time in my 23 years this issue has come up, so it's hard to tell how long this arrangement has been on the books.

But that doesn't help this year. What we can do is allow you to upgrade your small game license to a season hunting license for the difference in price - $ 59.75. If you would like to do this, just take a copy of this correspondence to our Regional office and have them do it.

My apology for the inconvenience, and I hope you continue to enjoy hunting in Idaho. And have at the coyotes - there are plenty!

Steve Huffaker, Director
Idaho Dept. of Fish & Game

I haven't heard if they changed the law.
