Decided to get serious about my predator hunting and bought a 17 Remington and have a bunch of loaded 30 grain Bergers non-mef's. Where I hunt there are coyotes, bobcats, and fox. I want be as fur friendly as possible, but still not lose anything. I'd like to try baiting and I would like to know from those that have more experience what times are most likely to see predators hit bait and will coyotes keep the bobcats and foxes from visiting if they are all three interested? I'm thinking my rifle is a wee bit too much gun and this new Remington round might be more of what I need as my shots are mostly in the woods and one powerline, but 0-100 yards would be most normal. Noticed everyone seems to prefer the .22 Mag over the .17 HRM and wonder if the new 25 grain bullet might even that out. I'm very careful in picking my shots. Seems to me for fox and cats that it would be plenty, no? Occasional coyotee would be a toss-up. It's hard to get one rifle to do it all and be fur friendly. I hunt in Orange and Alamance counties and am not overrun by predators mainly I think because of rabies and distemper keeping them in check. I worry about killing too many cats because I think they are naturally lower in density per square mile. Is that correct and can you over hunt them easy? When coyotes come to bait do you wait and see if more show up before letting into them or do you go for a bird in the hand?
