Predator hunting in Wyoming

I'm planning a trip to Wyoming this fall to do some deer and antelope hunting, and of course I'm going to sneak in a little predator hunting as well. I've been trying to get some information about the regulations for predator hunting in WY, but so far I haven't found much. I do know that there is a continuous open season on coyotes. I was wondering if it was legal to hunt them at night with a light, and if so could this be done out of a vehicle? What about other predator species? Any info you guys have would be appreciated.

Thanks

It is legal on private land with written permission from the landowner. If you get caught spotlighting on public land it is a hefty fine. You cannot hunt bobcats at night anywhere in Wyoming. I would guess you will be day hunting unless you find a willing landowner, and most don't want anyone hunting predators (especially at night) while the big game seasons are going on.

Scramjet,
There is more public land in Wyoming than you could just about hunt in a lifetme. I would shy away from the night calling and just hit it during day light hours. I was told by a sporting goods store owner that there is no spotlighting period. I would put in a call to the Game and Fish Dept.

Wyoming is a beautiful state in most places, the rest...well if you like mud flats and sage brush, it's looks good there too. My point is that I hunt daylight hours because I love the outdoors and the scenery. I can't take it in fast enough. Enjoy the wide open while you are here, you just may end up moving! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Good luck on you hunt.

I went on a similair hunt a few years back (didn't hunt predators at the time) in the Thunder Basin National Grasslands and I must admit that is a beautiful place. It gets a little crowded at the start of the season but that doesn't bother me much. I like the idea of going out on your own and setting up camp and hunting without having to be on a schedule, like you said just taking it all in and enjoying the outdoors.

Thanks for your input guys. One more question- is there any regulations on electronic calls? I was thinking about using one along with a decoy due to the open terrain.

Thanks again.

Q. Is it OK to hunt coyotes at night?

A. No it is not, at least if you’re on public land. Wyoming law prohibits the taking of wildlife with the aid of artificial light or a lighting device. If you are on private land you may use a light to take animals classified as predators provided you have written permission from the landowner.

Q. Can I use my spotlight to hunt predators?

A. Wyoming law prohibits the use of artificial light to hunt any wildlife except that predators may be taken by aid of artificial light if on private land and written permission from the landowner is obtained. Predators may not be hunted using artificial light on public lands with the exception that racoons may be taken by aid of a handlight provided the hunter is accompanied by a raccoon hunting dog and if on private lands, permission of the landowner is first obtained.

There are a few species of wildlife in Wyoming you don’t need a license to hunt. These species are coyotes, red fox, jackrabbits, raccoons, porcupines
