Predator Hunting With An M1 Carbine

i just got my m1 carbine all put together and took it out today and shot it. what a blast
anything within 150 yards or so its dead on

my question is have any of you guys/girls actually hunted with one?
it seems adequate enough for coyotes and smaller with soft points

When I lived in Juneau, Alaska I had a friend who used his M1 carbine to shoot deer. It did a great job. I recently looked into getting one for myself just for daytime calling.

I killed a couple of Sierra mule deer back in the stone age with a friend's, so sure, it'll do fine on (shorter range) coyotes.

I think any chance you can get to take that carbine out for some hunting fun is a high priority. Who cares if you cant nail a yote at 350yds?? That gun is an icon, enjoy it!

Before I got an AR, I used this carbine for hunting in the brush.

The sight is a Millet red dot in a no drill mount that replaces rear sight. Fast little gun with 90 gr. plinkers in close. Only killed a couple of coyotes with it, but had lots of fun.

I would use soft or hollow point bullets on coyote. As the FMJ's will pass on through & they'll run of ya. I had one many moons ago, I used on coyote.

I'm planning on using mine for short range until i get my dedicated callin gun I tihnk it will do just fine ive shot hogs with it before(head shots) and they went down in a quick hurry.

Good Huntin God Bless

I have and been around carbines all my life. They are a blast to shoot.

But as stated above you should use a soft point or hollow point bullet to insure that you anchor the yote. FMJ's just don't cut it and are banned for hunting in many states.

If you don't reload, then your choice of bullets and manafactures are limited.

A great little carry rifle though, and can really put the fire down range on targets around 100 yards. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

A question for those with experience with the 30 carbine. What type of accuracy can you expect to get at 100 yards with factory ammo?

Ive never really shot mine at paper but its deffinetly minute of coke can at 100 i can keep em dancin all day long. IM gonna get a few boxes of hollow points and sight the gun in good if i do decide to take it after a coyote though.

Good Huntin God BLess

Can't recall the mfg of my carbine. On a good day 2-3" @ 100yrds prone or bench. Also if I used one now. I'd use Military issue mags only,[not wannbe mag remake's]. My mag often jammed[cheapo remake]. But that carbine was fun & lightweight, "when" it shot consistantly.

At the time, the only bullets I could find locally were FMJ. I poked a few holes in coyote's, before they went down. Shot a couple[2?] coyotes, 3-4X before they dropped. Killed 1-Red with it as well. Red, took 3 solid broadside hits[chest, rump & heart] of FMJ. Before he dropped.

Yep, FMJ leaves a lot to be desired as a hunting bullet.
Not sure what is available in factory nowdays, but Hornady makes a nice half jacket 100 gr. .30 cal bullet that would load nice in the carbine and would be great at short range.

Loaded up several hundred a few years ago so haven't paid much attention to what is availble today other than the Hornady.
