This is my first time skinning a fox, I saved them to practice skinning in hopes to save them all in the future

they are skinned a few more question

what should the tail look like after you strip it???
Mine kinda balled all up toward the base of the tail

Oh, and don't try to stretch it back out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Learned that one the hard way /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

the ears are a B*tch

what the secret? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

and the eye lids??

the first one i skinned they were almost all there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh and I learned not to pull to hard when stripping the front legs they just might tear about 2 inches up from the first leg joint /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Well next is the board I'm sure that will provide me with some entertainment and another round of questions for you all

Ditto to what RagnCajn said.

Thaw, skin and save. If you toss them, you are tossing money away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

FYI: I freeze skinned hides all the time. I usually shoot and skin right away. I freeze the hide and when I get time to flesh and stretch them, I just thaw them out and have at 'er

Good luck

M

they were almost thawd

I will skin them in the morning

now how do you get that smell off of your hands /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Clinton asked the same question from his advisors.

Seriously, wear surgical gloves. Most drug stores sell them.

if its too late to wear the gloves try mixing small amounts of dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide, then add bakeing soda to make a paste. scrub your hands good with that rinse well and if they still have a little smell try to mask the smell by washing your hands with lemon juice and toothpaste.

I'll try to help you out.
The tail should look normal after you strip it.It should just look like a tail without a bone in it when its on the hide. Most of the coyotes I skin dont have a tail.Im not good at stipping the tail at all.
When you get to the ears just pull the skin down until you can see the cartlidge at the base of the ear thats up against the critters skull.Cut the cartlidge off at the skull.
When you get to the eye lids they are pretty easy to tear and what have you.So you pull the skin down enough where you can get your fingers inside the eye lids.Pull it down slowly and take your knife and cut the tissue around the eyelids thats holding it on.Just keep it pulled down enough so that you know where the skin is because thats the stuff you dont wanna cut.
Its kind of hard to explain so if you dont understand just tell me and I will try to explain it better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Well as i strip the tail the bone starts to come out then the tip of the tail starts to follow the bone the last 6-8 inches kinda balled up on the end. and the tail had shrunk in length the first one i attempted to stretch the tail back out and all I did was pull the last 6-8 inches off /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

so you leave the cartilage in the ear?
doesn't it have to come out if I plan on selling the hides??

I'll give that a try I pulled the skin as tight as i could and cut as close to the skull as possible and tore the eye lids instead of cutting maybe a little less brute force and a little more finesse is needed here

Thanks

Here is a great reference:
Coyote Skinning Steps

Pulling the tail is very simple once you know what to expect. It only takes one or two to get the hang of it IF YOU'RE USING A TAIL STRIPPER. Tail strippers are worth their weight in gold and they are very cheap. Try allpredatorcalls.com

Yes, you leave the ear cartilage in.

The eyes may take a couple practice runs too, but they get easier.

leaving the cartilage in would sure be easier, the fur handlers guide I have instructs me too take cartilage out which is a PITA

I will have to get a stripper looks like i might have been doing it backwards, if that is even possible??

thanks

I'll need to go shoot another test dummy

Don't forget to cut the tail all the way down after you pull the bone. If you don't it makes a pocket and holds moisture and will rot. The hair will start to pull off in a short time.

Jim

If your using the stripper you have to remember to pull up on the tail bone, not down with the stripper. The stripper should pretty much stay still and the tail bone is pulled up through it. Hope that makes sense.

FurHarvesters says to remove ear cartilage but I don't know anybody who does. It is common practice to leave it in.

The best trick for the eyes is to reach under the skin and put your finger through the eye hole and apply some pressure by pulling it away from the skull. This will show you right where to cut.(you should have a glove on now)

Good luck

Thanks all

I went calling for another tester this weekend but all stands were dry

had one stand up on the ridge top (400+/-yds) to see what I was offering must not have liked it he never showed up to the dinner table

I just watched a professional skinner at the Nebraska fur harvester convention skin almost every preadator(coon, fox bobcat coyote and many creek swimmers also)and he makes two little cuts(one on each side of the ear of the fox(approx one inch)sticks his finger inside and cartlidge just comes right out.He said if you dont do this the ears will look like s%it!!He is also a fur grader at the Canada fur auctions and handles thousands of pelts every auction.Just FYI
