PRIMOS CALLS

I was recently given a video on how to use primos calls to hunt coyotes, bobcats and foxes. Is there anybody who uses these calls /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif . If so are they any good, and if not what other calls would you recomend.

Wisco,
I am not familiar with the video you have, so can't really comment on that. As for the calls, there are a few guys here who have used some Primos calls with fair results. The real predator calling calls usually come from company's who specialize in predator calls. Johnny Stewart, Crit'r Call, and Sceery seem to be the most popular predator call brands around here. When it comes to mass produced "factory" made calls, it is hard to go wrong with any of the mentioned company's.

hey wisco I see Mr Cronk left him self out check out his howlers and his calls I hung up alot hand calls and my electric caller stays in the truck alot more then she used to. thats just my opinon no disrespect to anyone.

Doghog,
Thanks for the kind words concerning my calls. I do make some of the very best calls available, but they are hand made "custom" tools that are a little bit pricey for some people. For other folks who are interested in a really nice custom made enclosed reed predator call, try one of Jay Nistetter's Rhino calls. There is at least one other member here who makes custom enclosed reed calls. Help me out here fellow members, is it "Gon-Huntin" who makes those neat little wooden barrel predator calls?

Yep, I believe it was gone huntin that made those beautiful little turned calls.

And the primos howler is'nt a bad call. I liked it quite well. Not too hard to master and a good sound. It belongs to my BIL. Niether of us has tried the rest of the calls in their line up yet though.I would rate it above the Lohman by a little bit for sound quality. Both are made the same way.

Like Rich I feel some of the best calls made come from JS and Burnham Bros. A Js pc3 or a long range burnham will call anything out there. The burnham black magic has a good sound as well. The lohman dual tone has a little something extra that the critters seem to love too.

I also own Sceery ,crittercall, night and hale, carltonscalls , all fairly good calls . I just happen to like the tones and sounds the first ones give. Jimmie

Jimmie,
I had almost forgotten about the Black Magic predator call. I remember the first time that I heard Murray Burnham blow one of those black buggers. He made it sound so much like a jackrabbit that even the rabbits couldn't tell the difference.

Wiscokid,

I have a Primos Regulator 14 open reed predator call.It works very well for me here in West Texas. It is easy to blow and has a good range of different sounds that can be made with some pratice(except for the distressed rodent,I get too red faced trying that one).I also have a Cronk Cowhorn Howler that works great in conjuction with my distress calls.
I wouldn't limit my options as far as calls go.You can't have too many options when it comes to calling coyotes in close enough for a quick clean kill. Some calls may work better than others for you but why limit yourself.Find a couple that work for you and have fun calling.

Hi Rich, I saw a show years ago with Murray working that long range call. I was impressed to the point I just had to have one.The only thing available around here were olts and JS calls back then. That was my first mail order call. And I have bought quite a few that way since. I still have that call and it still kills coyote's every year.

My first JS was a pc3 and was so effective that when it gave up the ghost I ordered another pair imediately.

I don't think it is the reeds fo these calls that make the diference. It is mainly in the way they are designed. All manufacturers of calls use mainly the same reeds and materials. If you look at a Night and Hale closely enough you will find the same reed as the Burnham bros calls. But the barrel design is the same as many of their duck , goose and deer calls. I think that is where the big diference is.They are still very effective calls but there is just some little something missing in the sound. Jimmie

I have the regulator 14, it kills coyotes. I carry it as a back up call for the Tally Ho. it is small and loud fits nice in a shirt pocket. Any call will call coyotes if you get out in the woods and blow them.

I own both the Regulator 10 and 14. Both work great, and like Gtrapper, I carry them as backup calls for my Tally-Ho. I sure do love that Tally-Ho. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Welcome wiscokid,
Don't know much about these others but I can go along with Rich and Jimmie. The problem is finding out what works best in your area. They all have slightly different sounds even though they look and operate the same way. Tones would be the main difference to me. I have a new set of Crit'R Calls that seem to be performing very well here in tough Arkansas!!

the video was just one big advertisement for primos and the predator surpreme... in my opinion. It didnt seem to give enough information on how to set up and what tactics to use. But, primos does make some pretty good calls. I have their "still" cottontail w/ the vinyl reed, and it is just about one of the best closed reed calls I have heard for calling bobcats, simply because the sound can be lowered to a whisper and still remain clear. I dont know if all the other primos calls can do that, but I know that this one has called in several greys and 'cats for me, also a few coons, but so far only one coyote. I like johnny stewarts pc-3 and pc-1, and my burnham bros miniblaster for 'yotes.

I see no one really talking about the "pied piper predator Call" anymore. What ever happened to this call? A few people were using it this last couple of years & calling in dogs. Are they still around??
