Primos Hotdog, I need some advise

3rd Alarm

New member
I have had the Primos Hotdog call since last year. I have practiced with this thing ever since and I still can't howl without hte reed locking up on it or the pitch changing drasticly and not sounding like a howl. I just recently figured out how to kiyi with it, but after a while the reed locks too. Is this a problem that i need to learn how to use the call and it will go away, is it a problem with all or most open reed designs? or just this call.

I had the same problem untill I started playing around with the reed. I found out the more you loosen up the reed the better sound you get and it won,t stick on you. Playing around with the reed i mean bending it back and fourth. But not to the point that you put a crease in it. The bottom line is the more you play with it the beter it sounds.

If the reed is vibrating to the point that it's tickling your lip, then you need more lip and tooth pressure on the reed. Also, try pointing the call up at a 45 angle while calling this seems to help. I bet it took me over an hour of fiddling to make my Hot Dog sound the way I wanted. If this still doesn't work, throw it out, and order a pocket howler from Brad H, he makes great sounding calls!
Good luck to you.

well I have been holding it at that angle the whole time, I have added enough pressure to make my upper lip sore, I got 2 open reeds coming from ArkyYoter, so I think I will keep it for the Kiyi's (unless joe's calls do it better, which I bet they do since I gaurantee Joe puts a lot more time into each call than they do 1000 calls) and forget trying to get it to howl, does anyone know about the reed lock problem? Do all open reeds do that?

That is not a general trait of open reed calls. Well made calls work no matter what.Full of slobber, they work. Half froze , they still work.

Now the octave jump is not unusual to open reeds. Getting that perfectly smooth mouthpiece is the biggest challenge in making them. Jimmie

The Hot Dog can produce some great sounds but it can be a miserable, stubborn, temperature sensative, air hog. There are so many that will do the same reliably and are easy to drive so to speak. A Cronk Howler is a good example among other good calls available. I got a mini howler from Bearmanric that is good too.

I contacted Primos last week about this. I especially stressed the temperature issue. Apparently you, I and all the other folks that have experienced temperature sensitive issues don't know what we are talking about. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Funny thing is, if I hold the call in front of my heater vent in my truck or use it in the warm house it works fine. Let it get cold and it sucks! They told me to bend the reed upward. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Yeah, like we don't already know to do that? Fortunetely a very nice man

sent me some reed material. Change the reed and it'll work. Better yet, get a howler from one of our Custom Call Makers and have the best.

I used to think it was just me not liking the Primos open reeds. They just could not compare to other calls I already owned.I think they could be much better than they are. It's not just beginers having trouble with them. Jimmie

Next time you call Primos ask for "Bubba" in Customer Service. (yeah that is his real name I guess) Nice guy. He used to hang out around here a while back. Sent some calls out to guys to try and give him feedback on last year.

If anyone there is willing to help you, he would be the guy.

Why bother with primos???? Call up Dan Thompson and order a Red dessert Howler, or hit up Bearman here or Brad H. I have a an awesome howler from Songdog(he lives in Elizbeth, CO), It is sweet sounding and custom made. I will never buy a "factory production" call again after seeing and hearing what some of theese guys have to offer.

I'm pretty much done with Primos. I already have a cabinet full of Primos videos and a drawer full of calls, though. Heck, I still have a Primos decal on my personal shooting bench. My gripe is; when you try to offer suggestions or ask questions, they talk down to you like it's your first day calling. Ask a question that they don't have an answer to and they get defensive and hostile. I was banned from their forums for asking questions that they couldn't answer. After years of being on the internet and visiting message boards, Primos is the only forum I've ever been banned from. There are companies and people out there that want our business and our return business. I've been hunting much longer than Primos has been in business. If things don't change, they may end up like any number of other companies that only lived for the day.

IN_song_dog_buster,

I've never blown on a Hot Dog, only seen it in the package and heard Randy Anderson blow it at a seminar. It's toneboard has a very, very, very close resemblance to the Red Desert, in which I find challenging to blow.

Jimmie is correct, a well built openreed just works. No breaking in the reed, no slobber -vs- slobber, etc...

PM me your address. I'll build you a hunting model howler, send it to you, play with it for 30 seconds, then send me back the harder-to-use of the two howlers. No questions asked. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Sound like a plan?

Tony, I have worked them. The old primos enclosed reed holwer was a much better sounding call. Not as verstaile but better sounding and easier to work. That is just my opinion though.

A lot of these guys are using them and having good luck with them. I have to tip my hat to thier persistance in learning to use them. Jimmie

Tony,

I sent you a PM, I clicked to save a copy but it didn't save so I don't know if it went or not.

Read the help Tony build a howler post today, that was pretty cool. If you decide to do that again I hope you tell us ahead of time...like to be in on that one.

Thanks,
Scott

IN song dog buster, if it's worth anything give Dan Thompson Red dessert howler a try. I've used it in weather down to -25 below, and i think it sound better than anything when it cold. Just thought i'd offer my $.O1( HAVEN'T BEEN A MEMBER LONG ENOUGH TO OFFER $.02)

Well put Weasel. I agree primos is just not for me. Like I said, I am sure that Randy Andersons call is just a cheap knock off of the Red Desert Howler. Infact it is so close I am wondering how they got it through the patent process. I have seen the Red Dessert work in all conditions, it takes a little practice, but it is cool. Oh and if you get the chance have Dan Thompson Demo it for you. He can make just about any sound on that call, including an elk bugle.

I have both the Red Desert Howler and the Hotdog. The reed, the mouthpiece and the air channel are a bit wider on the Hotdog. I think that's why it takes more air. One thing for certain, the Red Desert Howler works day in and day out. Hot or cold, the Red Desert is far better than the Hotdog.

Weasel,Maybe i need a red desert howler? As good of luck as im having with my hotdog,i dont know i bet them others would be better. Maybe im just gettin stupid yotes to come in,lol
