Primos Ki-Yi Predator Call?

Has anyone purchased one of these things yet? I was out looking for some muzzleloader bullets today (Turned into a trip to every sporting goods store in a 100 mile radius) and saw the new Randy Anderson/Primos predator calls in one store. They had several different ones there available but they were all very expensive... $25.99-$27.99 for three of them but one of them was $6.99 so I figured I'd give it a try.

It looked like a decent call, it's called the Ki-Yi and it comes with an instructional CD. I wondered why it was so much cheaper until I got to the register and it rang up the SAME PRICE as the others.. $25.99 plus tax. Needless to say I cancelled the purchase but the girl working the register was friendlier than most and suggested she go check... she came back and said the sticker was wrong so she'd charge me $6.99 and change the sticker for next time.

Sounded good to me. So now I have one of these things and am not overly impressed with it yet. It has a three-stage reed in it where you can adjust the sounds that come out of it but I'm not liking that too much yet. Anybody got any experience with these calls yet? Heard any pros/cons? And what about the price??? Is it just the name you're buying or what?!! GEEEZE! I checked on Cabelas and they are only $15.00 there but they were consistantly $25+ at the stores in my area. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There is an old post by AllPredatorCalls that addresses the prices of these calls. It seems that Primos adjusted the prices down some time ago. Anyway, it seems your stores never got the info or never acted on it.

To do the KiYi call, I usually use a turkey mouth call, so I don't have any experiance with the call.

Here is the post...

I got the new Randy Anderson howler by Primos. I like the sound of it and you can take the mouthpiece off and use it separately. I have about 7 or 8 howlers and I think I like the old Primos howler for $12.99 best. It is the easiest to use for me, but the new howler is more versatile as the mouthpiece can be used by itself. I guess you could do that with the old howler but the read wasn't as versatile. I didn't buy the Ki-Yi because that can be made on just about any open reed call. You must remember that putting the primos name on the call adds dollars to the price tag. I was afraid when Randy hooked up with Will Primos that his videos would start to go downhill and the new one proves that. We lost the old Randy and are starting to get the commercial Randy. Money has a way of doing that. Randy's old videos are the best because of his personality and his down-home style. When he went commercial with Primos I knew he would start to lose some of that. Nothing against Primos, but Will Primos and his videos don't do much for me. Randy took the field by storm with his earlier videos because he was just a good old boy who liked to call coyotes like the rest of us. I still like him and his videos, but the almighty dollar has once again reared its ugly head. I don't blame Randy. It is just the way of the world.

It is just like I don't blame farmers and ranchers who lease out their land to outfitters. They can have people on their land hunting for free or than can have paying hunters. I blame the outfitters who are tying up the land for a profit. I know of an outfitter in eastern Montana who has a million acres tied up for deer and elk. His gross sales for deer alone was $500,000. That doesn't include elk and antelope. I grew up in eastern Montana and hunted wherever I wanted to back in the "old days". Maybe I am jealous because I could have done the same thing. But it wasn't in my upbringing to lock up land for my profit. By the way, this outfitter is not a local boy, but an out-of-stater. All of the local boys that used to hunt on all of those ranches that comprise the million acres can't hunt those lands like they used to. I don't blame the ranchers and farmers because the outfitter is responsible for controlling the hunting on his land and the rancher or farmer get paid for it. I know of a farm in eastern Montana where I used to hunt. The farmer lets friends and family hunt on his place for no fee. Most people give him a nice tip. A few years ago a big name outdoor writer whose name most of you would recognize tried to lease his land. When the writer put the carrot in front of the farmer's face that he could make a lot of money, the farmer said no thanks. There are some things that money can't buy. For everything else there is MasterCard. If the writer would have gotten the hunting rights it would have been only people with big money hunting on that place. The local boys would have been out. If you have money you can hunt anyplace you want. I am proud to know that farmer, but couldn't have blamed him for giving in with the situation of the ag and beef industry.

Sorry for the rambling. I will get down off my soapbox now.

Z, AMEN to the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. I understand where you are coming from. The day I have to pay to hunt is the day I quit hunting. I just got done watching Randys new video and I thought it was pretty good. Ive only seen Calling All Coyotes #1 though. I kinda fast forwarded through Mr Primos just for the fact of him being MR $$$$. But Randy still demonstrates his way of calling pretty good though. I thought Randy was pretty much the same Randy as before. But thats two people's opinion and I respect yours and others. I did buy the Lil Dog calls though. My next purchase I think will be the Hot Dog. Will that make me a hypocrite though buying the Primose calls? (Not trying to sound snooty there) Anyhow, best of luck to everyone hunting and stay safe.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about contributing to the demise of the sport by proxy. Spend your money your way, hunt your way and teach your kids sportsmanship. Sometimes people read into that stuff too much... just go out and kill something and don't lose any sleep over which hunter signs a contract with which company.

We don't need those guys (Randy A. - Jackie Bushman) as much (now that we've been hunting a while) but those videos are priceless for new hunters coming into the sport... take that away (both pros and cons) and our sport would suffer. Hunters are a declining breed as it is, take away the commercialism (pros and cons) and it will fall faster. Just the way it goes, so like I said, do your thing and kill all ya can while having a good time.

hello,i bought a ki-yi last spring worked great 1st time out even called a coyote with it,went downhill from there on out it plugs constantly even in warm weather i like the sound when it works just tried it again today and sure enough plugs up i have taken in apart cleaned ect...several times.i have the hot dog howler it works great.my advice no more ki-yi.

Interesting Dave, thanks for the input. I haven't had my call out to play around much yet... just in the truck on the way home from the store! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Okay, this call officially sucks. I've had it out for an hour or two and have yet to find a pitch or sound I really care for... any open reed call can make better Ki-Yi's much less the pathetic distress sounds. I'll keep chugging away at it to see if I find anything I like about it but until further notice I wouldn't suggest spending the money on one... especially the BIG MONEY they want for em'.

A buddy of mine has this call, and it is good for one sequence, then it would plug up. He was furious. He couldn't blow it out or anything. Only time would cure it.....only a few minutes, but any amount of time is too much.
