I had the exact same thing happen back home in Wisconsin. I tried the live trap, and never caught a squirrel. Then I tried a smoke bomb type thing meant for moles and gophers, but that didn't seem to work either. The only way I resolved it was by climbing up on the roof with my .22 while someone stayed inside and thumped on the ceiling to drive them out. But more came back! I remember shooting at least 8 squirrels over a two-year period. You can buy subsonic .22 rounds that sound like a BB gun. I even had a box of subsonic .22 shorts that I used to shoot rats in the barn with. Shoot them and patch the hole would be my two cents.
