Problem with lower, help please...

Hey guys,
So after my grandpa passed away last may we finally got through all of his stuff. A box of 3 complete lowers (minus stock) were found in his garage and I was given one of them. All we know about the lowers is that the box they were in said March 2000 and that mine is a DPMS. So anyway I put on an ACE stock I had and bought a few small parts it needed to be functional. I go to mount my 6.8spc upper on it and the rear take down pin wont go through, at all. I decided to see if my .223 upper would fit to rule out a defective upper but it wouldnt fit either. Thats when I noticed that the area right below the rear pin looked really shallow. My other lower is not like this, it goes much deeper. So I think that is the problem cause the hole on the upper for the rear pin cant go far enough to clear the pin. Heres a pic of what Im talking about.

Does anyone know why this lower is like that and if theres anyway for me to fix it so I can use the lower? I have no clue how old the lower is but Im assuming its older. Here are some more pics it that helps

Any help or info is greatly appreciated! I hope theres a way I can use this lower that way I can stop swapping uppers lol Thanks again guys!

Wow that's a new one on me. I would first email DPMS with that info and pic and see what they say. They might swap it out with a new one.

Looks like a really old one to me. Iv never seen one with raised lettering. No kitty cat on the side either. Id contact dpms too, they will have some valuable insite.

That what is refered to as a "high shelf" lower. The shelf is higher to stop the use of a drop in auto sear or lighting link. Is your other AR a bushy. They are a "low shelf" lower. The high and low shelf has nothing to do with quality. Low lower shelf lower has a shelf that is about 1/8 inch lower

my other lower is a PC lower and that shelf is much lower. The DPMS lower just barely doesnt fit, maybe a 1/16 in lower shelf my upper would fit. Would it hurt to try and file it down just enough for the upper to clear? I would only try that as a last result if DPMS cant do anything for me.

This just my two cents. I would not want to modify my lower. I would trim the upper post before trimming the lower. That shelf is one of the parts of your lower that you would have to modify to make it accept a m16 trigger group. You could also email the ATF and ask. If they respond that you can modify the lower, keep a copy of it

Good call

What's the diameter of that take-down pin?

Looks large, like the old Colts, but maybe it's the picture.

You sure it's bottoming on the shelf?

This could be a possibility - it's not bottoming out, it's just that the pin on the lower is too large for the upper. If that's the case, you would need an adapter to use the newer/smaller pins that would work with your upper receiver.

adapters to go either way-

Do the older colts have the same size pins front and rear? If so does the front pin fit?

To be honest I would just buy a new lower and take the lower parts out use them in the new lower and keep that one the way it is.
