"proper" name for a Coyote????

I am going to walk softly on this, so as not to step on any toes, but I have a question to ask thats bugging the Heck out of me. Let me preface this by saying that, no I havent killed the hundreds if not thousands of Coyotes that some people have, but I have been hunting for 20 of my 24 years, hunted everything natural to texas at one time or another, grew up outside in the woods, so on and so on. I associate myself with hunters, I like the breed, and I can pick out a poser with no problems. SO.....

Why the big fuss over calling a Coyote a "yote" or (fill in here) or whatever else you may feel like at the moment? Looking at several other sites, this seems to be taboo at its peak when it comes to Coyotes, and I cant for the life of me figure out why. A Coyote is a Coyote, and calling it one name or the other doesnt show disrespect in my eyes, Heck I say yote for the simple fact that its a heckuva lot easier to type on here, but when speaking to others, I most often say Coyote, and BTW, thats 2 Sylables!

Anyway, this has been bugging me, and I would like to know how everyone here feels about this. I just take offense when someone says I am less of a hunter, or ignorant, or disrespcecting the animal, if I call em a yote. Im not, and it shows single-mindness to me to think that way.But if you do, I am all ears as to why I am wrong for doing this.

Take care-Seth

BTW, please dont trash other boards...I just want opinions! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are people in this world that are on an absolute ego trip. They know more than anybody else, and they are more qualified to be in charge(of whatever) than anybody else, and it is their responsiblity to discipline everyone who comes into contact with them(on any subject) so that we all know and understand who they are, it makes em feel better about their penny annie little lives. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Ain't it a shame! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif But sometimes they are fun to watch. You'd be surprised what some folks call coyotes or yotes. I have a younger neice who pronounces it "Kite", she says it real fast. But we all know what she is talking about. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

i call them yotes.paster poodles and SB when they get one of my calfs.hay i am like you its alot easier typing yotes.you cant make everyone happy.so do what makes you happy.

Well, as you stated, at least you are remembering your audience before you say "coyote" or "yote". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's a little something that might help. Of the different areas that I've been, it's been pronounced differently. Examples....

Area Pronunciation Example
------------------------------------------------------------
Texas........"ki-at"........"Let's go call up a dang ki-at."
Soutwest..."ki-yo-tee"...."You shooting my ki-yo-tee?"
Northeast.."koy-ote"......"Oh, dat was a big koy-ote, eh?"
Midwest...."yote"........."Er, did you see that yote behind my tractor, Ed?"

I'm just having fun with this. It's a subject that I've always had a problem with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The truth is, Don't let anyone call you an "obvious newbie" because you choose to type "yote" instead of "coyote". Those who sit in quick judgment and have the audacity to call you out on it, fit into one group in my eyes.

I like to call it SPICE. (Self-Proclaimed Internet Coyote Experts)

Tony, that was my thoughts exactly! I have read some things people have said that stated the minute they read anything with "yote" in it, they know they are talking to a newbie or a moron. I dont see how using that term shows disrespect, and thats what i am curious about

Hey, to each his own, this just confuses the heck out of me, so I thought I would ask!

Sounds like somebody found the great john henrys board with his band of,,,, well never mind. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif You gotta be careful over there!! His poseys will threaten to beat you up if you want to travel to his house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Hey now I didnt call any names, I have found talk like this at several sites, just not here... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, I know. You can cure ignorance but stupidity is a permanent condition. Several things there turned me off after just a few visits.

Sheese! Don't y'all know anything? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif The "Y" word is a 4 letter word! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I am originally from Kansas and all my buddies here give me crap, because like rowney, I pronounce coyote with 2 sylables.

I've been having this discussion all my life. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Especially when I was a little kid. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Some "town" kid would call 'em "ki-yo-tee", & I'd try to "correct" them, by saying, "Don't you mean "ki-yote"?" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
[they never hunted anything /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif/I grew up hunting many things, but primarily coyotes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif]

I finally decided that it's all in the perception. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
Kinda like "tom-a-toe"/"tah-mah-toe" & "poe-ta-toe"/"pah-tah-toe". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Guys,

There are only two distinctions when it comes to these particular critters:

The true, recoginzed, undisputable, proper name: Canis latrans (and if you are swayed by some folks notions: Canis latrans spp.)

and then there is Common Names: Coyote, Coyotee, yote, song dog, dog, prairie poodle, ad nauseum... some common names are just more "common" than others. Thats it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

In my experience and opinion, anyone who gets truly upset (slightly annoyed is different than upset, mind you) about getting choosy and uppity, on which Common name is "correct for everyone", (when none really are) really needs to get a grip on just how self-important they really are not.

If theres a group or groups out there that all feel they are somehow superior because they somehow all choose the same common name, and have self-designated themselves as the Chosen-ones because of it, than I say they are all better off hanging out together: Stroking each others Egos by telling each other how great each other is and what experts they are, by acting worse than Old Ladies in the gossip and rumor games, and perpetuating their own self- importances.

I am sure they all deserve each other. Jockstraps and all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As far as "experts" go:
From what Ive seen, to be an expert: you need about 10% knowledge and 90% spending time telling people that you are an expert.

bottom line:
Dont believe the hype. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That's the only issue I've heard until now... the "ki-yote" vs "ki-yoteee" debate. Thems that call 'em by two syllables tend to look down their sunburnt noses at the pale noses of thems that calls 'em by three. Assuming thems that calls 'em by three have only been exposed to Wile-E in Bugs Bunny cartoons! (Which is true more often than not!) However, I think thems that get all uppity about it have a little too little to do with their time!

Coyote, Coyotee, Yote, Oat, Yotiee, Yodel-dog, Song-dog, Dog, *%$*!-#%?!*!, ... same animal! (WaWaWa...Bang!)

Heck, I say yote because I'm a Kentucky country boy. Thats just how we talk and type. By the way a hope to be shoot'in a yote pertysoon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Great leaping desert dogs! I can't believe that on some boards guys would actually get upset about what we call a yote. Let them go the politically correct route. I sure hope that doesn't happen here. That would be horrible. Predator hunting would go the way of the Harley Davidson. The only guys ya see riding Harleys now in Californie are lawyers (new leathers, new boots, matching helmets, clean shaven, spotless bikes, trophy chick on back, etc.

Yotes, Desert Dogs, coyos, mountain mutts, etc. They're still the ambush of choice.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Tony you crack me up...

Truth be told, not a man on this Earth can tell you what to call a Canis latrans , yeah... they are not calling it buy it's proper name when they call it a coyote! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif If they want to put you down for calling a coyote a yote... then they are wasting their breath and your time. Like Tony said... SPICE! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
