Public land around Poteau Oklahoma

flydown

New member
Cjdavis618 and I are going to the hunt in Poteau next weekend. Does anyone know anything about public land in that area(where and what type of terrain and cover).\
What is a good source of info on the area?

I live out here by Poteau. 99% of the public land here is logged every chance some money can be made. So be ready to hunt thick, thick woods with lots of hills and small mountains. Might want to bring a shotgun for public land. Private land around here on the other hand is largely cleared for cattle. Most of the private land here is very hard to get permission to hunt, and much of it is getting leased up for prime $$$. Go figure, cause it's not prime hunting. Most of the locals hunt deer and many call. So animals are often well educated. Permission to hunt private land for the upcoming hunt took a lot of work to get. I am currently trapping 3000 acres of private property that permission was sought for the hunt. The most fun calling with a rifle is on private property to which you have sole hunting rights. If you figure out how to effectively call these thick woods please let me know.

I think the OK board where you registered for the hunt has a lot of info on it. Have you checked there?

We haven't registered on the board. I would like to join while I am there in person, unless there is a problem with this.

I just got back from W. Texas and haven't finished making my bookings for the local area, so I hope that isn't a problem with joining there at the banquet.

I have read through the hunting regulations about predators, etc, but didn't see any reference to what shotgun and rifle restrictions are placed on public land. Are there any that apply to public vs private land?

There is alot of public land to the south that you will be able to hunt on.Honobia creek requires a land access permit that you have to purchase along with your hunting license. You can use almost any gun you want with the exception that if you use a shotgun the shot size can't be larger than BB.There are a few waterfowl areas where you have to use non-toxic shot.
There will be a game warden at the hunt to answer questions.

^Has information on the different public hunting areas in Oklahoma and all of our laws and regulations if you need to look into those at all.

^That map can be found on the wildlife department's website as well. It has areal maps of all the public hunting areas and such. I'm assuming you guys are thinking about hitting the Wister and Leflore WMA's. I would suggest calling the biologists for those areas and talking with them. All of the Oklahoma biologists that I have talked with have been very helpful.

Here are links to descriptions for both areas.

I've personally never hunted that area but most of the public hunting land I've been on around here has been good quality stuff that's well taken care of. I would most certainly carry a shotgun for each of you and maybe have one of you carry a rifle. Or one carry a shotgun and the other a rifle

Good luck!
