Pulsar Talion XQ38 Review Including a Coyote Hunt: KC Ep.46

I have told Pulsar for a long-time that I would be happy to test a thermal if they sent me one. Pulsar took me up on my offer. Overall, I was pleased with the Pulsar Talion XQ38. It is a lot of scope for the money. You can read my testing results here. Especially for someone with a bolt gun looking for a thermal that could be used for virtually any activity, the Talion XQ38 is a great choice. After about 4 minutes, the video switches to a coyote hunt, so there is a review and an actual hunt.

We have the Talion XQ38 at Night Goggles.

Eventually, I will get a response or some PM's asking me how I am hunting at night when the night season isn't open currently in my home state? I will refer back to this post if it comes up. It is almost always one or a combination of these 4 things: [*]The video is from when the night season was open. I am trying to put out 52 episodes with one episode per week. With our night season open for less than 4 months, I need to bank a lot of footage, and there will be lots of videos released during times when our season is closed. [*]The video was recorded in a state where the season is open.[*]Korey is on his own land or land he has been assigned "Agent" status under a depredation contract.[*]The video was recorded during daylight hunting hours. [/list] I don't plan to talk about which of these apply for each video unless it is pertinent to the video. 204AR didn't ask this question, but it usually happens eventually, so getting it out of the way.

When will they be in stock?

Actually a season never even crossed my mind lol. A buddy and I are planning on kicking it off this Friday night.

The general time period we have been hearing now is September. I am hoping it will be in a matter of a few weeks, but we listed 4-6 weeks on the website just to be safe. Getting it ordered now will make sure you get in on the first batch as soon as they are received.

... excellent reportage Korey, after all, as always!
I will never thank you enough for the great information and dissemination effort you make for all of us.
But the image of the Talion XQ38 is not even comparable to that of the Bering Optics Super Yoter that seems to do a whole other job ... (lol !).
Are we expecting a Pulsar Talion XP50 or XG50 in the future?
... for the moment I have found the Talion XG35.

(lol !). Ernest, you are correct. The Talion XQ38 does not have as good of an image as the Super Yoter. However based on the specifications and the price, it shouldn't. It is comparable to a Hogster Vibe. The Super Yoter is almost twice as expensive, so the Super Yoter needs to have a better image, and it does.

... for the moment I have found the Talion XG35.I am not sure. It would be a welcome choice for many coyote hunters due to the increased base magnification that comes with a 50mm focal length.

Seasons never entered my mind either. We can hunt nights all but about 20 days. (Deer & Elk general season.)

Pretty sure Korey isn't going to jeopardize his hunting rights by breaking the law! lol

My Apex xq38 was about the same price as the Talion but definitely doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

When will they be in stock?

A friend of mine already has purchased one...probably a month ago, so they are in stock at some locations/vendors. So far he is happy with it.

Let's have fun with math together and calculate 4 interesting parameters to compare the 4 thermal devices mentioned in this post:
1) Pulsar Talion XQ38;
2) Pulsar Talion XG35;
3) Bering Optics Hogster Vibe;
4) Bering Optics Super Yoter 50mm .....
The parameters we compare are:
A) angular FOV;
B) Horizontal linear FOV, in feet, (HLFOV) at a distance of 100 yards;
C) Pixel density (Image Definition) on square yard at the distance of 100 yards (ID);
D) Size of the side of the square, in inches, displayed by one pixel at a distance of 100 yards (L)

Talion XQ38 FOV 9.8°x7.4° HLFOV 51.5 ID 500 L 1.76"

Talion XG35 FOV 12.5°x10° HLFOV 65.8 ID 851 L 1.35"

Hogster Vibe FOV 10.7°x8° HLFOV 55.9 ID 424 L 1.91"

Super Yoter FOV 8.8°x7°
HLFOV 46 ID 1736 L 0.94"

Analyzing these parameters ... we are more and more amazed by the resolving power of the Super Yoter! That's a fantastic value ... less than one square inch the size of the square displayed by a single pixel at a distance of 100 yards ... Optically it's truly impressive!

There may have been some early release products out, but Pulsar was looking for an official roll out at the end of August. We are still waiting but anticipate they will be arriving soon.

Will the Pulsar Talion work as a hand held scanner ? If so what suggestions as to how to hold it, carry it. I use an old Pulsar hd 19a which has a 1/4” hole with camera strap that I have fastened to bino straps that works very good.

If I remember correctly Korey you used a scanner with a hand hold of some sort ??
