Pup Distress?

I relativaly new to coyote hunting, i've called in a couple and have downed one. (as I showed earlier this week) But i was just wonder why they like the pup distress? and when should you use it? do they eat other coyotes pups or something? it just doesnt make sense to me. And does the pup distress work at any time of the year? since they have pups in like, march or april? I'm just trying to learn and this is one thing thats been bugging me a little.

I'm no expert, only started coyote hunting a couple years ago, but from my understanding, they are coming to eat the wounded pup, unless it's a female, then they're coming in to figure out what's going on. This time of year really seems to be a good time to use it, but all year round works too. It's just like fishing, some calls work on some days whereas others won't. Hopefully someone else will answer, bc like I said I'm no expert by any means! I'm still having my fair share of stress at the moment. I'll be following this post to see what the pro's say!

I have called them in with pup distress. I use it at the end of each set. My thoughts are they come in to the call for different reason, like to check out on there off spring. They are just curious to what is going on as they know each others language and know something is wrong with another coyote. I know it work and I use it. That is my 2 cents and it works for me. Yes I have killed coyotes and went back a couple days later the coyote was all eating up and there was coyote tracks everywhere.

I think they are coming in to eat them. Google "infanticide". Competition, genetics etc. Coyotes are very smart but they can't structure logic. They can't read a calendar. They are the ultimate opportunists. If it sounds distressed they are in.

i have left hundreds of coyote carcasses out in the areas that i hunt, most skinned, some not. i my 15 years of coyote hunting, i have only once seen evidence of coyotes eating their own. it was a female in heat and the carcass was eaten and strewn over a couple hundred yards.

pup distress works wonders in the spring, but does work all year. it has brought in coyotes to me when they have no interest in anything else.

Nobody knows for sure, but the maternal instinct seems to work for female coyotes year round. Who knows why the males come in to pup distress, but anything from curiosity to hunger could pertain. The one thing I am absolutely certain, when it come to coyotes, is don't ever say never.

The real fact is that a puppy distress is just another prey distress scream. An easy meal is what the coyotes hear. Now in the spring time after the pups are born, the pup distress within 1/4 mile of the den can trigger the maternal instinct as well. The pup distress is a "double whammy" sound for calling coyotes.
