Pup in distress handcall

Hi gang - I'm curious what call I need to make a GOOD puppy distress call. I have heard about this on this forum, but what exact call are you guys using. If I want a pup in distress now I have to use my E caller, and I don't like the hassle of setting up. Plus I get more satisfaction calling hand calls.

I like to throw those 'yotes a changeup now and then, and the distressed pup is one of my favorites. Let me know the call and technique I need.

Thanks, Sleddogg

I use either one of my open reed horn howlers or I also made myself a call with just the mouth piece just like I put in my howlers with an added 1/2" p.v.c. coupler on it, and it sounds pretty darn good for pup, female, and ki-yi sounds. I would think just about any open reed howler would work for this, as long as you can get the higher pitches from the call.

Most open reed calls will work. The CritR'Call Pee Wee is particulary good however. The Burnham Bros. Mini-Blaster is a good choice if you want a closed reed call with more flexiblity. It does great pup distress whines.

Good Hunting,

Bob

I just got one of Rich Cronks Cow horn howler and it makes AWESOME puppy distress sounds, very loud also /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you want to make pup noises, not adult coyotes crying, you can do no better than to get yourself a Dan Thompson, Pup Squaler!

It is an excellent call, though easy to loose, and should be just what you are looking for.

Like Dan says ".223 brass with open reed - mouth held, it leaves your hands open. Makes perfect puppy cries and rabbit sounds."

I couldn't agree more.

And don't forget the turkey diaphram calls. Whines yelps and all.Especially when they are close, no movement. Can even get mouse squeaks out of them. Jimmie

I'll echo Krusty's comments, the Dan Thompson pup squaler is about the best $5 I ever spent. It makes whines and pup ki-yi's very easily and realisticly. Only problem is, they are extremely easy to lose. I actually lost the reed out of mine, during a recent hunt. that thing is so small, it was like looking for a needle in a hay stack, once I realized I lost the thing. I've been meaning to order another one, but the Sportsman's Expo is coming up here shortly and I bought mine from Dan himself there, last year.

Making high pitched sounds on any quality howler should give you about what you need as well.

Hey guys could someone describe to me how to make the pup crys and the ki-yi's i have heard both of them done but dont know how to do either one! anyone wanna give some advise?

Lawhorn02,
Your question is a good one. The "scalded dog" sound is absolutely the hardest sound to master that I know of. It is mostly in your breath control, and practice is only way to really master it. Pup whines are easy, just keep your hand closed over end of call while blowing high pitched breaths into the call. Another type of pup cry that is easy to do is to close your hand as you blow, instead of opening it. OWWW-OWWW-OWWW instead of waaa-waaa waa. Mixing high pitched owww-owww-owww along with some MMMM-MMMMM-MMMM's (The MMM's are pup whines /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) will give you some decent pup distress sounds while you continue to practice the sound of puppy tail being mashed under the rocking chair.
