question about taking out stitches

I was pulling out wood fense posts on a friend's ranch 2 weeks ago. I got my finger twisted up in a log chain and it tore my finger up pretty bad. I ended up with 9 stitches. Dr. said to take the stitches out after 2 weeks. I got 7 of them out last night. On 2 of them the little knot is already grown into the skin. I would really have to do some digging to get them out and once I get under the first layer of skin, it's VERY tender.

I'm wondering if I could just cut the two loose threads on each stitch and just leave the knot. Would I ever notice them? Would they get infected? They sure don't appear to be doing any harm. The gash has certainly healed up good.

Thanks.

Here's a pic. The 2 in question are the 2 in the bloodiest area on the bottom. When the cut healed it healed over the knot and just left the two loose ends sticking out. I'm a sissy when it comes to dr.s doing this stuff!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Should have saw me when I was getting the stitches!

Don't leave the knots. Your body will try to expel them. Get some of that topical cream for numbing a tooth ache and apply that before and while digging. It will help ALOT!

No real problem to leave the knots other than just knowing they are there or if they are in the way of something....I would however not like them on the tip of my index finger. I had two stitch knots that finally worked themselves out of the skin on my forehead after thirty five years....doubtful I was ever at much risk.

I had about 25 in one finger and about 9 in another when I squished my ring fingertip off in a winch. The DR took 'em out but missed a couple. Very irritating in a finger, lots of nerve endings. A few days later I dug down, like digging for a deep splinter, and cut the thread on one side of the knot and then pulled at the knot, they pulled right out pretty smooth.

OMG! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That's not your bird finger is it? Say it isn't so. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Isn't there a nurse in the family who can take care of it for you?

Just pull the darn thing out. Grit your teeth and rip it out of there. My kids pull there teeth with fishing line and you just got a little cut!

Be a man- rub some dirt on it, spit on it, walk it off.

If you leave it in, it'll fester up and thats more fun than the stitches. Post some pic's of squeezing the pus out! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A good thing it wasn't your trigger finger. If you leave them in you will have to dig deeper later on.Better to get r done now.A pair of needle nose plyers, a shot of ta kill ya and a quick yank

I've got one in my leg where they took a vein for my heart bypass that is trying to come out after two years. The doctor said to leave it alone and it will fester, the knot will turn green, and it will pop out on it's own... Lost half a finger 45 years ago and the same thing happened there... Unless some red streaks start extending from the wound to the hand area, a doctor can't do much for it... except dig deeper than you can with the same results.

guess I'll bite the bullet and head to the dr.s office tomorrow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Not looking forward to it.

Isn't Mrs. SoDak an RN? My Mrs. is, she says all ya gotta do is pull up on the tail of the knot with tweezers and cut under the stitch thats connected to the knot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. Greg says put a stick in yer jaws first /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. You can do it. If you can't see the tail end or knot ya better go to the doc /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif. You don't want to pull the knot through the skin. Or, you can come over here and I'll do it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

just yank the damn thing out. it took longer to post this then it would to fix it yourself. i dig thorns and metal out of my hands with my pocketknife. dont be a puss. you work in a candy store or what?

Grip and rip. Been there, done that. Not fun.

Just get a good hold and put a steady pull on it. You don't want to damage any skin by puling too hard too quick. And yes it will hurt. But afterwards you can put another bar on the man badge.

Boy, a guy can't get much sympathy around here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.
