Question for you Kansas predator callers

Me and a buddy are thinking about taking a couple days off next weekend to do some predator calling, and I'm just trying to figure out possible places to go. Both of us are pretty new to predator calling and don't exactly know what we're doing. We're in Wichita, so we probably won't want to drive too far, but since we have two days we could drive a couple hours and camp out if we want to. What we're trying to figure out is where to go though. Like I said, neither of us have done much predator calling and the few places we've tried to call near Wichita we haven't even seen any coyotes. What places in Kansas have the best populations of coyotes and predators? Any ideas on places to go? We've tried calling in the Byron Walker wildlife area and Slate Creek a few times but haven't gotten anything at either place and we're thinking that there just might not be a lot of coyotes in the area. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

If you don't have one, pick up a WIHA atlas. You can get them at Wal-Mart/Gander Mountain/ect. While you won't be able to tell what the terrain usually is, you'll find plenty of ground to hunt. Normally the larger areas of land are pastures or groups of pastures.
I really can't speak for the rest of the state. But the population seems to be up here in the north-central counties. The number of predator hunters is up though, as well.

I grew up around Emporia and I used to head North and East to the state resivors. Melvern Lake is a good area, John Redmond, Toronto, Reding. I would always look for catle ranchers with lots of catle around especially goats and sheep ranchers as well. Usally just ask and they will let you hunt. Kansas has lots of walk in hunting. Canis knows his stuff so I would do what he says as well.

+1 on the WIHA atlas. Combine the atlas with Google Earth and you should be able to identify some pretty good looking areas and weed out others from your computer.

Hi. I go to college at Pitt state in Pittsburg. Its about 2 hours east of Wichita, I'm sure you've heard of it. Anyway there are tons of strip pits here where coal mining was done a long long time ago. Its all grown up now with cedar trees, prairie grass, brush, etc. It looks good for predator calling to me but like you, Im kind of new at this. But there are places on the KDWP website that you can find places to hunt. I think its called "mined land". There are several relatively cheap (but nice, not gross) hotels on the edge of pittsburg that can have you at mined land in probably 10 to 15 mninutes. Good luck!

Will is spot on! Get a WIHA atlas and hunt till your heart's content!

We have plenty of coyotes and WIHA ground here in the Russell, Barton, Ellsworth, and Osborne 4 county area.

The Wilson Lake Wildlife area is 8,000+ acres of public hunting, but you can't go there--that is my secret!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good Luck!

Just got back from a pheasant hunt around Russell, Waldo, and Paradise and I can attest that there is plenty of WIHA land around there. I felt like I walked 40 miles this past weekend. Saw LOTS of scat.

That's pretty much what I've been doing so far, just looking at the Hunting Atlas. I'll have to try google earth, cause the main issue is finding out what the terrain is like. I figured it would be easier to find more dogs in the bigger areas, actually Wilson Lake Wildlife area looked like a pretty good place. It seems to me like I've seen a lot more coyotes in the areas north and west of Wichita, like Barton and Stafford counties. Or southeast by Greenwood and Elk counties maybe. I guess the only way to find out is to go out there and give it a shot so we'll see. Thanks for the advice guys.

Hutch,
The Wilson Wildlife Area is about as rough a country as you will find in these parts. Lot's of creeks, sloughs, canyons, etc.

We have not been skunked since we started calling there. Dry stands, maybe, but no dry days! Called a triple in one spot. Most is walk-in access. Prepare to pack your lunch and walk a lot!

There is a ton of coyotes there! You might want to have your furharvester license, too. Good number of nice bobcats as well!

Tim

I have my furharvester license and I really want to shoot a bobcat. I've been trying to get one of those since last year so that would be awesome. We don't mind walking if the hunting is better, in fact I kinda like going further in there's usually not as many people. Thanks.

I graduated from Pitt in '04 and there are a lot of good areas to call around Arma, and Girard. I never tried calling around any pitts but I used to drag record bass out of them by the boat load. I would try to call out by the pitts right off stateline road, about two miles north of fourth street. I actually saw a job listing when I lived down there to work on a cattle farm over west of Girard and took the job. When the owner found out I liked to call he would actually pay me to go out and call after all the work was done for the day. It was a pretty sweet gig.

Tim, I figured you might hunt there. That's an area I haven't tried, because I don't want to ruin too many of your spots. I'll stick to the area from Russell to Stockton/Osborne/Glen Elder. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I forget how much is in those other counties out there, but I love the fact that Osborne has over 30,000 acres in WIHA every year!
I wish more land would be available in Saline/Ottawa. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
