Getting another AR very soon an dI am planning on giving it the old Krylon/Rustoleum treatment. Thia will be my firt try at this so I have some questions:

1. Do you take off the forearm to and paint the whole barrel and gas tube?

2. Any problems with the barrel getting hot under the paint? (seems all paint except high temp and engine is rated at 150F or so) I'm a little concerned about burning the paint off and the smell once it gets hot.

3. Paint the bolt?

Thanks in advance people, any help is greatly appreciated.

I did not paint the gas tube, gas block, or barrel under the handgaurd on mine.
I did paint the barrel and muzzle brake outside of the handguard with the same Krylon I painted the rest of the gun with. At the range I have fired it up pretty good since painting it - to the point that the free-float handguard itself got hot - but I haven't seen any ill effects on the painted portion of the barrel.

also, to answer your question above, I did not paint the bolt carrier - I kept the dust cover closed.

That looks SUPER, pukin!

Trash,

1: Nope. If I can't see it, I don't worry about it.
2: Nope. I've had my crap cookin' in the Wyoming Sun all day on the p-dog fields with a toasty barrel without worry of paint coming off
3: Heck NOPE!

I paint the upper & lower separately, since I switch my crap around all the time. With the crappy sponge job I prefer, it don't make a bit o' difference & they all match well enough...

UPPER:
remove bolt/carrier charging handle & close dust cover
Fill that void with papertowels & mask off the whole inside with blue painter's tape.
Blue tape over gas block (i like to see the DTECH symbol

)
Tape off foward assist plunger.
Tape off rubber handguard (if it's a Hogue)
Stick a foam earplug in the muzzle & tape that off, too.

LOWER:
Take off handgrip.
gently pack papertowel pieces down around trigger & mask the internals off with tape.
Tape around trigger shoe.
Tape off face of buffer tube.
Tape off anywhere on the stock you don't want hit (buttpad perhaps?)

HAVE AT IT

The older the paint job, the better I think the Krylon looks! I like mine to be all beat up & scuffed lookin', but you can always touch up here & there.
Cheapo spraypaint is suprisingly durable!!!

+1

Kingzero, nice paint job! I have a Rock River Arms Coyote Carbine on layaway at this time, and I was considering having it dipped in Realtree AP, but after seeing yours, and the fact that it will run me more than I want to pay for the dip job, I'm thinkin I can do just as well myself. My question is how did you go about stenciling the black you got on there? Ive camo'd alot of stuff with Krylon, but never with a stencil, and did you coat it with a matte finish at all?

That does look pretty good. Looks like he used tape that he tore to get the jagged effect. Iv dont that with good results. Im like'n the sponge jobs. How well do yall think the HVT high temp clear coat will hold up. Iv used it on headers and once its cured its some tuff stuff. Iv thaught about after painting baking it in the oven minus all the plastic parts.

Now that I look at I see what you mean WidowMaker, blue painters tape maybe? I like the way the black breaks up the faded background.

Haven't done my AR yet, but with the guns that I have done the only difference is price. Krylon's cheaper...

Definite no on the bolt Trashcan... I don't paint anything that moves that I think might get sticky. Did my shotgun, left the magazine tube, action bars, bolt, magazine door, all trigger and safety assembly, unpainted.

Ya the blue tape is what i seen used. I like the effect it gives. Bushy your sponge job looks sweet. I wonder what it would look like if u used the tape and a did a sponge job over it. Might b too much though.

I have tried maybe over 100 patterns thru the years ( on pvc pipe), spread them all over the desert to see which one vanished....this one was it... works with every color.

i put krylon on my 243 and it has not chipped but do notice that some commonly handled places on it have started to kinda wear off. no biggie, just touch it up. was wondering about rustoleum due to the wider range of colors vs krylon

I used krylon on my SS barrel and have a few chips, but it want blasted before i painted it, i plan on using self etching od green primer as a base coat and sponging it but dont know what the primer will do to the stainless.

never had a chip from rustoleum. it will wear from use though and is not solvent proof...I have fixed both of these areas with the use of duracoat.
