Question on Bobcats and their fur

There has been some debate around here about cats and their fur not getting long until it stays cold for a while. My thoughts are, just like a dog in winter, they get their winter coat. Why wouldn't a bobcat do the same thing. I was told that basically a cat could grow hair at will if it stayed cold for a little while. I would have to say that a cat, at a certain time of year, would get their winter coat and keep it till spring. What's the general consincous from ya'll??

Thanks,

My fur guy swears that he fur on BObcats doesn't get real good until Mid February. Not sure why that is, but he swears by it.

I always thought most everything in nature was regulated by photoperiodism, but I don't know for sure. I also heard that every rule has its exception.

I believe the cat and badger both prime later in the winter. I was advised several years ago not to sell the cats until March.T.20

Do you mean hold the fur until March to sell, or only sell the ones you take in March?

If he is grading the fur, and the early fur is not the best, "holding it until March" wouldn't change his price.

Photoperiodism triggers the primeing up of pelts. Mild winters can start rubbing earlier than usual. I know rubbing is tied to mating season, but I believe the mild winters start this process earlier. Coyotes I killed this year after christmas were for the most part very poor quality. Our best time for coyote hides is november here in OK. December is decent , and Jan quality is really falling. This year they got poor early and fast. Our cats are better the later in the season, but our season ends after feb 28, so I can't tell you how the quality is in march. I do find it strange though that the cats are not effected like the coyotes by mild seasons(at least in my observation).
One of these days, I'll figure out this pic posting thing. I have a bunch of hides I was getting ready to ship, and you can see the quality differance I am talking about.

Wait to sell until March, I think it was to do with the markets, not sure if it was just fur priming up. More than one fur buyer told me the cats and badgers prime later after Dec. Just sent mine to John Hughes of MT, hoping for a good price, had a bad trapping trip. I tried a new area and bombed out.T.20
