Question on Leupold VX-II 4x12x50 Duplex - Problems

I have the above scope and noticed that when you are looking though it at about 8x and then try to zoom it back down to 4x without moving your cheek weld, the field of view narrows significantly. You then have to move your cheek weld back about an inch to get the field of view to re-open back to where it should be. None of my other scopes require this repositioning of cheek weld when zooming up or down. I contacted the company I purchased if from but they are insistent that "it is a Leupold and there is never anything wrong with them".

Could someone who ownes one of these scopes try the above and let me know if your scope does this. I've tried adjusting the diopter but that has no effect on it. I find it strange that you have to change your cheek weld because of a zoom adjustment. Thanks in advance for your help !!

There is nothing wrong with your scope. The eye relief changes as you zoom in and out. Leupold lists it at 3.8-4.2 inches on your model. You typically want to be on the highest power when you mount it as it will have the least amount of eye relief on the highest power.

I actually have a Redfield Revolution 3x9x50 listing the eye relief as 3.7-4.2 but when I zoom it like the Leupold it doesn't close down like that at all. Have you tried doing the above with yours (as noted in my question) and get the same results as what I am seeing? I mean the field of view is cut down by 1/3 or more unless you move your head back. Give it a try and let me know. I'm just thinking there could be some defect in this one. Thanks for your help, Kevin.

Does anyone own this scope that can give this variable zoom test a try and let me know the outcome? Zoom it to about 8x amd then without moving your cheek weld or head location zoom it back to 4x and see if you have to move your head back to recapture the field of view. None of my other scopes (Nikon, Bushnell, Redfield, Tasco) do this.

Thanks for your help, Kevin

Most hunter type scopes have a "leeway" built into the scope. Leupold does this on scopes to accommodate people with different vision. Leeway is the range the scope gives you to achieve the correct eye relief (distance from eye to eye piece on scope). Usually the range is .5 to 1 inch. This is what you are noticing. The smaller the objective (your scope has 50 mm objective) the more noticeable this will be. I Do not have any scopes less than 60 mm objective for this reason. The leupolds I have also do this but not near as noticeable than on smaller objectives. Also your scope is a 4-12 power magnification. That is a large range of magnification and will cause you to loose eye relief more than say a 3-9 magnification. It simply has more movement and more magnification range which makes it fussy on eye relief. The 4-12 power scopes I have give me more eye relief problems than 3-9 power. Also, some scopes are worse than others. I think your scope is fine.

Theory sounds good mountain luke but I have a Bushnell Elite 6500 (2.5x-16x-50mm)that does not do this nor does my Nikon (2.5x - 12x - 50mm). If anyone out there has this scope and can give this a try for me please do so and let me know if yours does this as well. If this is how the scope is designed to work then I will get rid of it. If it is an optics problem I'm going to send it back to Leupold. Thanks much, Kevin

Leupold's do that. People that don't like it prefer the Zeiss Conquest. You don't typically adjust the soon without breaking your cheek weld so it's a non-issue for most people.
