Question regarding .22LR

I've purchased a Ruger 77/22 rifle with a 3 to 9 Nikon scope. I plan on taking this along on a prairie dog hunt. My favorite .22LR ammo for hunting is CCI Mini Mags. Here's the question. Will this rifle and ammo combo be effective on prairie dogs at 100 yards? I have other rifles for the longer shots, but would like use the less expensive .22LR for the shots 100 yards or less. Opinions please. Thanks.

They should work. I would try it for sure. Very little noise & a pdog is rather thin skinned. I've taken groundhogs out to 65yds with a 22LR but I was using CCI QuikShoks. HTH

Yes, just about any 22lr is potent enough to kill prairie dogs at 100 yards. Just don't expect them to fly apart or into the air on inpact like when using the higer verlocity centerfire 22's.

I use a Ruger Mark II pistol for shots under 50 yards...using Remington Sub-sonic rounds. These are very quiet rounds and don't seem to upset the prairie dogs at all. In fact on windy days I can usually shoot these for about 20 minutes before they catch on.

Then I switch to a 22 Mag for shots up to 150 yards...and then a .223 for shots up to 300 and finally 6x45 for anything longer.

For those not familiar with prairie dogs...think large mouse. Very thin skin and usually about 8" from nose to butt....if you would use a 22lr on a rat or mouse...then a 22lr will be fine on a prairie dog.

Bring a bucket of chicken...take a break and start over at 50 yards.

Glen and Colorado both hit the nail on the head. One concern with any 22 long rifle is accuracy with a certain brand of ammo. 22's seem to be rather finicky and you might want to try several different brands to see which one shoots best in your gun.

Nothing more fun on earth than plinking those ground squirrels at ranges under a hundred yards with an accurate 22.
