Questions about a 284 win

I'm curious if anybody on here has built a 284 win . I'm toying with the notion of a 284 built on a long action in order to seat 162 gr amax bullets to their full potential and at the same time take advantage of the full powder capacity of the 284 case. I was thinking a 24 inch barrel in a Rem varmint contour.

Anybody build something like this? What barrel length did you go and what are you seeing for velocities? It seems there has been a small resurgence in the 284 win somebody has to have one.

Your thinking is correct on the long action. I had a 25/284 and it really was too long on a Rem Short action.

If you go over on the accurateshooter.com forum, there are lot of people shooting this case in competition, 1000 yd.

There is only 6oz difference between a Rem long and short action.

For your information, my stock rem 700 with a 26" ss barrel is shooting the 162 SST at 3100 in tiny groups with Retumbo(215's), bullet jammed the lands. THis gun is a parts gun, bought the barrel off of ebay, Boyd's laminate, which makes it a poor mans custom junk yard dog. IT shoots 2 1/2" groups at 550 yards, so I will keep it.

Also, on your 24" Rem Varmint barrel, you would end up about the same weight if you got a #5 Shilen taper on a 28" barrel. The #5 Shilen will give you all the stiffness you need for your desired accuracy.

I put muzzle breaks on everything from 223 on up and wear electronic ear muffs.

Suppressor is being ordered in 2 weeks and that's gonna add another 8 inches so I thought I'd max the barrel length at 24 maybe 26 inches. That purchase is coming first then it's time to start finishing some long awaited rifle projects.

How deep in the case are you seating those SST's?

I had a 6.5-284, on my 3rd barrel, I went back to 284win - actually a Shehane with a used reamer and dies, but I'm not sure how much difference there is between it and the original spec. Very fun, almost boring long range cartridge.

I'm looking at another one to go with it, hoping for a 14".

SST's will not shoot well in my rifle unless I touch the lands with them.

I have an original Ruger 77 tang safety rifle in 284 Win that is strictly a light weight hunting rifle. It shoots the 140 grain Sierra bullets, both SBT and flat base, incredibly well, and the combination works well for hunting purposes. Its twin bought at the same time did not shot well from the git go, and it got re-barreled years ago to 6.5-284, many years before Al gore and the internet discovered the cartridge, and it too works well as a hunting rifle.

Probably the best application of the 284 Win was in the very handy Model 88 Winchester rifle, which I still use frequently for hogs in south Texas.

I can't imagine the 284 Win being used for anything else but hunting, but that's just my perspective.

The 284 Win (and the 284 Shehane-Improved version of the 284 Win) is one of the most popular cartridges for 1000 yards F-Open shooters.
The 284 Winchester is so popular that Norma is now making brass for it.

That's the much newer/other perspective on the 284 Win that doesn't interest me at all.

I use 168 SMK's, 162 A-Max, and 180 grain Berger Hybrid's in mine.
H-4831, and Norma or Lapua brass.
Rear grip XP-100, center-grip XP-100 and a F-Open rifle. Will post pics later

Center-grip 284 Winchester XP-100 (162 A-Max)

Rear-Grip 284 Win. XP-100 (168 SMK)

F-Open 284 Win. F-Class Rifle (180 Berger Hybrid)

I'm not as specialized as those above, but the 284 Winchester is about my favorite round. I top out at 140 grain loads for my Browning Micro-Medallion.

What distances are you wanting to shoot it at?

Well I was thinking it would be my first attempt at a 1000 yard rifle. Just banging steel mostly, I'm sure it would find its way on an a few open prarie late season coyote hunts as well. No match shooting or anything, at least not yet.

Ackleyman I was wondering more specifically where in the case would that put the base of the bullet. Would that put the bullet around the neck shoulder junction?

If you are only looking at steel then the 180 Hybrid would be my go to.
All around bullet for hunting and everything the A-Max is a good choice.

Pretty much my thought exactly. It probably will be somewhat of a do all rifle so the plan is to figure on using the Amax.
