Live trap a coon and let him bark at it and hang it up in a tree!! Coax him on.
A year old is good. If you have any friends with started hounds ? ask them to tag along with your young hound.

Dont show him a cage coon to many times though! If he is real interested, show him one or two and then start tieing him back and release the coon in front of him and let the coon go up the tree and then let him go. This will teach the dog to look up.After all of this and he starts doing well, introduce him to a feeder bucket and this will teach him to use his nose.BryceJay their is a real good book called Walk with wick, this book is the holy grail of coon hunting.1 year old is perfect for a dog to start.Alot of people start them to young and they are just like kids, you cant hold there attention long .The best dog I have ever had and still have got is a walker that didnt start doing anything until he was 13 months old. Then their are some dogs that just dont make it ,you'll be able to tell.goodluck!

Everything up above is great info. My experience with when dogs starts hunting is different from MCWALK though. I've never had a dog that turned out worth a spit that wasn't gamey as heck by 6 months and hunting by 8. That doesn't mean it was hunting "good" but it would hunt by that time. They get to a year and aren't hunting I punt em down the road. Thats with dogs that have been started as a pup though, yours is adifferent story.

Here's a couple thing you can try: Find a coon crossing roads and dump your dog out on the track (or 50 yards away) or you can call some coon during the daytime (as your dog waits in the truck) and then let your dog run the track. FoxPro's "Coon Distress 1" brings coon outta trees and makes em run the other way in a hurry. Both these will help get your dog using it's nose and keep them away from off game.

You are talking about something completly different than what Im talking about.Sure its great to take a pup out and let him run with the rest of the dogs at the age of 6 to 8 months...BryceJay was asking about a dog that hasnt had a chance yet because he is a year old.I have had numerous dogs that I have let go by the age of a year old that I knew was not going to make it..What I am talking about starting a dog to young is to show a dog a caged coon or to let the coon grab the dog at 6 months old and it scarces the pup to death and the pup is then ruined. All dogs are different, their maturity levels are different.I have had some dogs on the tree by 8 months old and had dogs treeing by them selves by 1 year old.Like I said they are all different, and as far as useing a game call to call in coons for a dog,all you are going to do is to teach that dog is that when he hears that call he knows that a coon is near and he doesnt have to work for it or find it on his own...(bad,bad idea!!!)

Devin69 what I am trying to do is just help BryceJay with his question. If you are going to go off of an idea that someone has I feel sorry for you.Mine is alot of trial and error,30+ years of coonhunting!I have bred dogs from clover, lipper, nailor,pac-man,savage,chief,and of course the greatest walker of all time, sackett.I have also had alot of dealings in blue dogs and plotts.BryceJay goodluck with your coonhunting and if you need anything send me a PM and I will answer to the best of my knowledge,if I dont have an answer I will find out for you...Oh and by the way what Vargy said about starting a dog I agree with 100%,find someone that has experienced dogs to run with, just make sure they dont run trash...

Dude you need to take your meds. If you would like to have a Pissing match, I will not lower myself to do so.If you only have 30 years experience then you have some catching up to do. I was not giving you any disrespect. For you to go off on me is crazy, you even agreed with me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I thought we were agreeing with each other at least I was agreeing with you. I thought that was a great idea you told him about Walk With Wick. I had forgot about that. And like you said "Mine is alot of trial and error,30+ years of coonhunting!" What better way to help him than hook him up with someone that is already coonhunting? And he can still jump on here to ask everyone questions???

Devin, I am in Utah county and that would be awsome if you could hook me up with soMeone up here. And MCwalk thanks alot I'm sure I'll be sending you soMe pm's. Thanks guys

I think we all have good ideas here,The kid can look at all the info, and make his own choices about how to "start" the dog.I ran coon hounds for years, but that was in my teens.I feel my knowledge does apply though. A year old is not to old to start a dog, many of us start at a younger age with bloodlines we know, and we start over finished dogs,be it for yotes, cats or coons. If you only have the one dog, start with a caged coon, let him see it the first time or two, then dump a pail of water on it, and drag the cage a 100 yrds or so,be sure the dog can't see what you are doin.Lift the cage up a tree. This will get a "started dog" lookin up. The Walk With Wick books are a weath of info for any type of hound. I got them from Lion Country,a few years ago.
My best advise is to listen to all the info on here, look at the old post, and decide for yourself "who knows what"
Not trying to cut anyone down, but the kid needs to make his own choices.

Callin coon out of trees isn't any different than using cage coon. To much of either is a VERY BAD THING. Once your dog knows what a coon is, it's time to do the most important step......GET THE DOG IN THE WOODS!. All the "yard" training in the world isn't worth a spit compared to what a dog learns in the woods. IMO, 2 nights a week minimum, 4 might be better. They don't have to be long hunts, an hour should do it at first. I'm betting after you get your dog on a couple cage coon it won't take him long before he's running track and going all out. He might not do it well but I'm betting he'll start.

Good luck and keep us up to date.....

BTW, I'm sure I've ruined more dogs than I ever made. As a matter of fact, I've never made a dog. It's amazing how much natural instinct hunting dogs have in em and sometimes it's better to just stand back and let the dog do what it does. Give it a little guidance here and there and a good pettin as often as possible and you should be good.
