Quick Observation: Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 vs. Nitrex TR Two 3-15X42

Picked up a Nitrex TR2 from Natchez and casually compared it to the Vortex Vipers that I bought from CameraLandNY as they were within about $50 of each other.

Couple of quick observations:

[*]Quick appearance looked to me like the Viper had a better overall construction to it. Maybe it was the finish and/or the turret covers but it looks to be a better made unit.[*]Looking through the glass, the TR2 has a very nice bright and clear view. The Viper is almost as good but maybe just a small notch below where the TR2 is.
[*]The turrets and AO adjustment seem much more smooth and "secure" on the Viper vs. the TR2. Overall I have much more confidence in the Viper holding its settings vs. the TR2.[*]Eye relief on max power is much better on the TR2. Granted you're talking 15X vs. 20X but overall, if you need some eye relief, I would definitely recommend the TR2 over the Viper. [*]The resetable turrets on the Viper fell much better and easier to use than the TR2.
[/list]

Having not put the TR2 through the paces at the range or in the field, this is about all I can offer right now. I have had my Vipers on a PD hunt and they performed great on both a .22-250 and a .204 so I can say without hesitation that I like the Viper line.

I'll try and post back when I get some side - by - side range time.

Would really be interested in seeing a comparison of the TR Two 4-20 vs the Viper 6.5-20, I think it would be a more fair comparison as well. I'm on the fence here, thinking about picking up the TR Two 4-20x50 for $259 after $100 rebate, but hear the Vipers are very well proven. Only thing making me lean towards the TR is that I like the 5x magnification range, and I'm not terribly worried about the tactile feel of the clicks since it's a hunting scope and I won't be doping for range. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Another thing to consider is the Nitrex is a 1" tube vs the Vortex with a 30mm tube.

Thought about that as well, but saw a review on Snipershide and the guy said he thought the TR Two had a slight edge in light and clarity... who would've thought. I'm more wondering how the eye relief is (especially since it's going on an AR), consistency, etc etc.

light gathering ability has nothing to do with tube diameter, (not enough to be discernable to the human eye at least), you gain windage and elevation in going to 30mm tubes. as far as eye relief goes it would be fine with the tr2 on an ar; it seems to hover around the 3-3.5" range on the higher end of the magnification. i have three of these scopes, and the only one that will give me 4" of relief is the tr one 1.5-5X32.
