Quick-Trac 5000

Has anyone used the quick-trac 5000+ receiver? I have only used wildlife material units with Johnson's collars. This receiver is supposed to track several different frequencies. I use 217 and one of my hunting partners uses 219. With this unit we could track each other’s animals. Thanks for any input.

Quick-Trac is good--better than the Magnum in my experience. I really like the Icom RC-10 scanner--you can track anyones hounds with that but you do lose some range. It's way cheaper too.

I have the Icom IC-R10. They are really cool and can do lots more than a QT 5000 can. You can pick up any frequency .5 mhz-1.3 ghz. You can use this as your tracker as well. Yes the range isn't near as good, but you can buy an amplifier from the GRE company for 60 dollars. This will give you the tracking range that you'll get with the QT 5000. For even less than half the price. IF you are wanting to track everything i would get the Icom r-10 scanner with an amplifier and your yagi antenna. All of this new would only cost you 289+60+90= $440. That is exactly half of what you can buy a QT and yagi antenna for. Thats a great buy in my book. See ya'll and good luck. MOyotehunter

I had a QT 5000 and the best thing about it was the thousands of channels, it was the worst thing as well. Everyone wants you to track their trash runners because you can.

The range wasn't great for sure. I don't know about the Icom these guys are talking about but it sounds like a great deal if it will work. I use a MN-10 with great results. It retails for $500.

i have never used any thing but wildlife trackers. my first was a TRX64 and i upgraded to a trx2000. i know they are costly but i really like it. i got the range and can really pin point a hound. it dont bother when i have other live collars in the box as much as my 64 did.let us know what you do and how it works.

Vargy

You are right about Wildlife Materials Vargy, they are the standard by which everythingelse is judged. I used to guide a lot of bear hunters from the eastern US and have used about everything out there. I have a FLS 1000 but am limited to 217 freq. It is also a little harder to tune than the Wildlife TRX 2000 and it doesn't have an attenuator. The Icom RC-10 is way handier--it fits in the front breast pocket on my carhartts. When I need to course just pull off the rubber ducky antenna and pop on the yagi. Another nice feature is that you can set it to scan just certain freq. No more recharging either--it uses 4 double AA batteries and I only change them about once a month.
When I'm bear huntin in Wisconsin during training season I have about 5 old collars that I rig up on my bear baits. I set the Icom to scan just those collars. I freshen up those baits about 4 am then go back and eat breakfast at the cabin and just keep checking those collars till I get a hit. The collars are all within about 3 miles of the cabin.
Moyotehunter--first I heard of the amplifiyer--how's that work and where do you get one? I picked up an RC-10 off of e-bay not long ago for less than $200.

One other thing I forgot to mention about the Icom scanner is I programened in the local police codes and I can listen to the game warden. Kinda handy in case he needs some help or something if you know what I mean.

Hey KKahmann, you are right about how handy this little things are. We got ours from Ebay as well, for just over 200, $203 I believe it was. The amplifiers are called GRE Super Amplifiers. You can do a search on your favorite search engine and find then I would think. We also bought our amp off ebay as well for $37. They make a big difference when you are trying to track. It does add more static, but that happens too when you turn the gain all the way up on a regular tracker. Like you also mentioned you can program a police frequency or game warden freq. and stay out of trouble. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif You can find both the amp and Icom R-10 at this website: CHQ website See ya, MOyotehunter
