Quick Wal-Mart Remington review

Well, the walmart rifles are a big hit here on PM right now so I figure I would give a quick review of mine. After purchasing it, I bought a box of Federal 165grain Deer Thugs (30-06) just to have something to shoot. Like the "Guru" I am, I took it home and swabbed the barrel really good and headed to the range. After chasing the cross hairs for ten rounds, I checked my mounts and they were loose (DUH), a few more rounds down the tube and got a good 1 1/2inch group at 100yds. Hmm not too bad. I know your wondering about break in, Yes I used the one shot method. One shot after another then another then another. Took it home and cleaned it really good. After about 10 seconds of really hard concentration, I decided to ditch the wonderful scope and rings that came on the rifle and replaced it with Leupold rings and base with a Redfield scope. Now, to the reloading bench. I loaded 10 rounds with 51.7 grains of IMR 4064 and a 155 A-Max and 10 with 52.6 grains of the same with the same 155 A-Max. The 51.7 load came in with 5 shot around an inch plus, thinking not to bad for a cheapy rifle. But when I shot the hotter load, WHOA, what is this??? I ended up with four shots cutting the same hole and the fifth just out. Heavy trigger, barrel rubbing the tupperware all over the place but still shot a group like this!!!! Maybe its a little diamond in the rough. Definitely will be a deer hammer.

All Remington 700 triggers are all adjustable.

Some people have reported mixed results trying to adjust them, but I've never had a problem with adjusting one, whether the old style trigger or the newer X-Mark. I've never messed with the X-Mark Pro.

JME.

I picked up a 700 VS Stainless 4 years ago with the xmark pro. From the factory it broke at 6.5 lbs. Adjustable? I managed to adjust it to 5.5 lbs. Finally got it to 4 lbs with a Timney.

Can't blame Remington, they're gunshy on their triggers with all the bad press over their older triggers.

I'm a bit recoil sensitive so a heavy trigger isn't helping me. It breaks clean but horribly heavy compared to my other rifles.

Exactly how my xmark pro was. It was a very crisp trigger but I couldn't get it to adjust to 5 lb. I've heard of others who let a gunsmith work on them but mine had so much epoxy on it I decided not to waste my time and money.

Mine is on the recall list but it's been replaced. Change the stock and trigger and you'll have a great rifle. Mine is very accurate now.

Having the same issue with zero creep, smooth but heavy.

What trigger did you install?

I was looking at getting a Timney 40x.

I went with a Timney and than a B&C Medalist stock.

The Xmark would probably be a good trigger if you could get it down to 4 lbs.

I bought 2 of the Walmart 700's, both 243's, one with 24 inch barrel and the other a youth model. I will probably just set the youth model back and sit on it a while. Both came with scopes, and the scope came off the rifle I'm keeping, replaced with an old Simmons 44 Mag I've had for years. I have had that 44 Mag on a number of different rifles, and it adjusts for windage and elevation better than any scope I've ever had. It was real windy here today, and I had only planned on zeroing the scope at a hundred yards and then doing some serious shooting on another day. Four shots put me center and 2 inches high at a 100 yards. I couldn't stop there, so I set some pumpkins out at 200 and 250, and killed them both. I was shooting my pet load for 243's that shoots well in any 243 I've tried it in....45 grains of W760 and an 85 grain Sierra HP. This 700 ADL is ugly, but is a shooter it seems. By the way, I adjusted the trigger to 3 1/2 pounds without a hitch. It has a good trigger, reminds me of the old Remmy triggers.

The recall must have missed where I bought mine, [beeep], they had four of them still on the shelf. I bought the last short action 243 youth tonight. Its gonna be a donor rifle, maybe a creedmoor in its next life.

If you bought it from a Wal-Mart then it has done been sent back for repair, turn around on the recall was 18 days once they where pulled from the shelves. Some have been marked with a OK stamped on the Box Label to show they where processed at Remington for the recall.

I helped a buddy with the XMark Pro get his adjustment down. It took a re-spring, but got down to a nice 3# with that. I also cleaned up the contact points on the seat with a scotch brite and CLP. Oh, we also swapped the adjuster in the trigger shoe with a shorter set screw. It was a consistent 3# pull on my RCBS pull gauge. Nice, clean and crisp.
