I just would like to see if anyone has ever tried to call Raccoons. I got a mouth call and would just like some advice or tips. I heard a few things about.
I usually try not to call coons, and some nights that is all I get up. I use a variable pitch sceery call. It is a high pitched call and I have had all kinds of predators come to it. If you get one comming, stay loud. If for some reason it hangs, lip squeak, and it may just get in the truck with you. (or wherever you are)
I wasn't trying to but the other night a coon came in to a series of calls. I started with howls (Crit-R-Call Magnum) and then went to rabbit distress (old squirrel call with the bellows removed). The coon hung up about 100 yards out pacing back and forth but wouldn't come closer. After a minute I started lip squeaking which made the coon charge in to us. Coons aren't in season now here in Michigan so we didn't shoot it. When it got within 10 to 15 yards I had to holler at it to keep it from jumping into my nephews lap.
What the hell is up with coons and squeaking lips? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I myself plan on trying to coon hunt this fall. Is that a good tactic for stubborn coons?
Last month down on the Concho River on the west end of Lake Ivey. I got three coons to cross the river 4 different times. Firts thing I used was a yellowhamer tape. The last three times was my Johnny Stewart critter-getter coaxer. Needless to say I wasn't tring to get coons but what the heck to was fun. When my kids are out of school on spring break I think that they need to shoot the flea infested varmits.
Can't stand those sucka's! There is nothing more frustrating, than when you are calling start to shine the light and see eyes! Then keep calling and find out that the eyeshine is from a coon instead of a would be Bobcat or yote! I swear lately I have called in at least 10 coons in the last month! Guess I found a Crawdad in distress call by accident! Good hunting, and yes they will come to a rabbit in distress call!
I have called in quite a few coons after I have spotted them while bow hunting for deer. These have been spotted at dawn or dusk. I don't think the shot bother deer as I have shot deer and coons and nearby deer never lifted their heads. I lip squeak the coons in for teh shot. I have had only one coon come into a rabbit call and it was a large boar at dusk. I took him with a front chest shot witha 22 hornet at 8 feet. At the crack of the shot he flopped rolling towards me and I had to move to keep from being hit.
getom59. Check your rule book. Coons are never in season at night for callers in Michigan. The only way to take a coon at night is with dogs at the tree or on a predation permit.
I have been calling coons in for a few years. I
use a coon squaller, rabbit distress hand calls.
E-caller I use coon puppies distress, coon fight,
or some kind of bird sound. I have had more luck
with the hand calls. No bad experiences yet for
me, maybe for them.
