Raccoons - Need to eliminate as many as possible

My Dad went out to the deer lease last weekend to check it out. His 55 gallon feeder was completely emptied by raccoons and they got into the electronics, got mud every where. Last year they shorted out another feeder.

I'm going out this weekend with everything in my arsenal, rifle, shotgun, traps, lights, coon fight calls, female coon scent (sex attractant), sardines. Put Tanglefoot on the feeder legs.

What other secret tools can I use?

And yes, I know I can't kill them all, but I can put a dent in the population for a few weeks.

Even thinking about battery powered electric fence.

Fences do no good on feeders....

You can get something to block the raccoons from climbing the legs, though.

A tube of grease smeared on the legs works pretty good too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

When we get em botherin our irrigation pipes we just spot light em... they are really good at tearin off pipe gates and letting water run everywhere... heres about 20 minutes from this summer. [image]

I can't believe I'm about to tell you this....Cause I use to raise Coons as pets and had one that stayed with me for 3 years. BTW if you know my personality at all, then I should tell you that this isn't one of my obscure jokes.

Coons LOVE grapes......Espescially the white ones. Throw some of those out and watch them come in.

I don't want to know how it works out for ya.

I'd go out and call up and kill a mess of them, then make chicken wire cages to hang on the bottom of your feeders to keep them from getting into the spinners.

had my britt. tree two of them a couple of weeks ago!!! i was going out to stop the britt. and the boston from barking, i thought gma had let them out before bed time and hit the bathroom, when i got out side to stop the racket, she was standing there and said there was a coon just climbed a 15 ft. tree next to the street! the dog walked over to another 15 ft. tree in front of the house and another coon was in it!! both coon were bigger than the one i won in the globe raffle!!! lol we have just about everything in the los angeles area!!

i have been seen a ton of coons this year deer hunting more than usual. Already shot two with my bow, and missed another at about 30 yards. They must have reporduced awfully well

Get you some 220 conibears and some buckets. That will put a hirten to them.

This and snares should cure your problem. Have some fun calling as many as you can first of course. lol!

Good luck

Got the conibears out already. Even have some 5 gallon buckets from the donut store that have some fermented chocolate icing in them.

I used some stuff called Tanglefoot on the feeder legs. It's super sticky stuff with castor oil in it. Super nasty. Apparently it either washed off in the rain or they finally rubbed it all off.

I had a few coons growing up, but we always fed them dog food or birds and mice that we'd shoot with a BB gun around the house. Never tried grapes. They'd always wash the dog food first in their water bowl. Interesting to watch.

On the electric fence, I'm thinking of mounting it up on the legs near the feeder.

Wanna watch something funny? Give them an Ice cube....They will wash it too but the ice cube melts in the water and they wonder where their treat went /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. The one that stayed with me for 3 years was named "Boomer" and he came and went as he pleased except at night we brought him inside and he slept with me. But when I would get home from school and couldn't find him I would just yell "Boomer......Grapes!" and he would magically show up. He was smart enough that he knew his name and what the word grapes meant. Oh! and when he ate the grapes he would wash them too of course, but he would skin them before he ate them. Ever tried to skin a grape? It's hard enough to do when you have the intellect of a human much less being a critter.

I miss my coons /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Try trapping them, you could take probably all of them that way. Cage traps, footholds, snares in fences or trails, conibear in a bucket or cubby. Marshmallows work good on them in cage traps.

Interesting thread.. I just looked up Raccoon recipies.. seems that some folks eat these little Masked Marauders! Found some interesting recipies ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

i just recently started calling these guys and was so impressed with how often the come in, how fast they come in and how many come in at once, on two occasions i actually had them attack my fox pro -- i have been using the racoon pup distress mixed with the raccoon fight, usually on this sound within 1-3min
good luck-

You've got about all of the advise you need to reduce your coon population some. I'd just second some of what has already been said but instead I thought I'd throw this out there just because. I live in a town where you can't shoot or trap, it has extensive waterways and lake system and plenty of brush and trees. We are basically overun with wildlife. Plenty of coons, see them all the time. Well they cause there own little problems and it's worse when there is as many of them as there are. Vet says we have one of the highest rates of tapeworm, roundworm and giardia that he has ever seen. So our pets basically [beeep] up a storm. That being said someone has got some revenge by live trapping them and cutting off their tails. We've got quite a few tailess coon running around. Makes them look kind of funny but doesn't do much for the problem /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Woohoo! Got my Coon Cuffs trap in the mail today! That thing is build solid, no stamped POS stuff. Heavy steel tubing, thick face plate, solid mig welds. That Egg trap can't hold a candle compared to this thing.

The more I check corn prices, the madder I get about them and what they're doing.

Got it from F&T, a forum sponsor. They even sent a pretty cool mouse pad with a howling coyote on it. I typically don't use a pad anymore, but I like this one enough, I'll use it anyway.

I was going to suggest something like the coon cuffs. You can build something similar for alot less money. I've never done it but I remember something in my old trapping books about little boxes made of wood, bait inside, one hole with nails or screws stuck at an angle so when the coon puts his hand inside to grab the bait, he won't pull it back out. Just remember, if you're going to set a trap that doesn't kill, you gotta check it frequently. Good luck.
