Ramshot Powders

Has anyone out there done much loading with the Ram Shot Powders? I tried 23 grains of X-terminator in my .223 with 69 grain Matchkings. The best group ever (0.166") and 2845 fps. I was impressed, it seems to burn real clean also. I bought a pound of TAC and was going to work up a load for the 22-250, and 243. Anyone have any help as to where to start? Thanks in Advance.

smyldoc,
I have been using Ramshot powders for a couple of years now , and have like the results in velocity and accurracy that i have gotten from it.
The main powders that i have used are Big Game and Mag. . Both have been real consistant and clean .
I would not recommend using TAC , it was basically designed for .223 pushing the heavier VLD bullets .
I do not shoot a .243 but i do a .22-250 . I use 39 grs of Big Game and it pushes a 52 gr. Sierria match HP @3867 on a 10 shot string . This combination groups @ .25 " consistantly .
A person that you may be able to find a load for a .243 from is James L. . I know he has done some loading with Big Game in his Savage .243

I would contact Western Powder at 406-232-0422 and ask for an Edition II reloading manual for Ramshot.

They only show TAC loads for the 22-250 but Big Game powder shows both and I believe to be the best bet for both. I have used all these powders extensively in .17, .223, 22-250, and .220 Swift. They seem to work well as most others in the ball powder range.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ya'll. I down loaded the second edition of the loading manuel and I'll report how it goes. I have been extremely impressed on how consistent the velocities have been when I have chronographed these powders. Is that your experience's?

Just a word to the wise... from what I've heard, Ramshots Handloading guides, specifically the 2nd Ed are a little flaky w/ regards to some of the data. I've heard various 'theories' as to why, some including the company owner cranking out the data manual rather than the ballisticians. I've not heard of anyone 'blowing' anything up, but I get worried when I look at the load data for something like a .243 Win for Big Game powder. Hornady's 87gr HPBT, and 87gr V-Max are indeed two different bullets, and may very well have different jackets entirely. But two whole grains difference btwn the two for that powder? Somehow, I really have to wonder about that. Anyway just remember the data in the Guides is just that, a guide.

milanuk ,

The information printed in the 2nd ED. handbook has been verified by the Ramshot Lab. .
What Ramshot does is recieve loading information from users and then verify this information in the lab .
The way that i found out about this was by talk to a Ramshot rep. and a company spokesman . I also wondered about some of the loads that they had published concerning the 6.5 X .284 . I knew it was a wildcat load and wonder where they got their information .

Jack...Sean's experience is going back before it was a factory cartridge. I know he spent a lot of time and effort in getting the information for his loads....

I use ramshot Big game exclusively in my 243 as well as my 22-250. I get 3580 out of a 22 inch barrel 110 Savage and that is not a hot load in "this" gun. I have seen two cracked necks wile using this load but was due to other factors concerning MOLY!!!!!!

Big Game in my 243 has not been chronoed as of this time. Keep meaning to do it. Even went and bought a chrony to do it but have been to busy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif .

As you may have noticed I haven't given any amount of powder used and I will not as I feel that it is a good way to get someone hurt. Both of my starting loads were taken straight from the II edition reloading manual.

I tried the tac in the 22-250 and sold the leftovers to a friend in short order. That was before I owned a 223. The velocities were way to slow for what I wanted. (around 3300) Had to go back and buy some again after I got the 112 savage /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh did I mention that the big game load will push a 40 grain sierra hollow point at well over 4000 fps out of my 22-250????? With a grouping of a little over 2 " at 200 yards. Now I gotta work on tightening it up a little by varying the seating depth....

I know Jack you already asked me why... Just because I could lol!!! .......James L.
