rats?

I know some old timers that said the most fun they had in their youth was going to the city dump to shoot rats. Rats are vermin so yeah, i would consider them varmints.

i wish i knew a place where i could go do that. i've heard they used to be thick down by the grain elevators (i live in a shipping port) and they used to go down there at night and hit them with hockey sticks!

where could one go nowadays' to go blast rats? in the northern WI/MN area.

Pa. predator hunter,
My dad used to raise turkeys and we always had trouble with rats. So at night we would go around the pens with a flashlight and .22 shorts and shoot them. I don't know if their varmints but it was alot of fun!! I know down south they shoot Nutria which is described as a semi-aquatic rodent so I would say rats qualify. If nothing else it would be fun.

well dont get me wrong... but they are pretty tough critters... i hit 2 of them today with a 22 long rifle and both of them ran.. if ya dont make a good shot they'll run down holes... i ended up getting 4 of them today... A good place to hunt for them are around corn cribs and farms... It's exciting doing it though!!

varmint n (alter of vermin) 1; an animal or bird considered a pest; specif; an animal classed as vermin and unprotected by game law. Webster's Ninth Collegiate. Pretty definitive huh?

I used to go to the dumps and shoot rat every week.

Hard to find a dump these days. They have all been closed up around here. They are now called land fills or recycleing centers.

They all have big tall fences around them, posted no trespasing, no shooting and have operating (open) hours posted also.

Guard house at the gates to and cost money to get in.

Welcome to the new way of life. It is suposed to be for the better for us this way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

One year we got a few rats moving onto the farm so when we got bored doing chores we would take a bread and have a rat killin. Used water, shovels, tractors, whatever it took to get them above ground and in the open and then let the dogs have at them. Great fun.
We also tend to get rats in the silage bags. Whenever we are taking the last load from a bag I let dad run the tractor and bust them with my 12 gauge when they run out. Thats fun as well.

In the Sacramento area we would go out at night in the rice paddies and blast them till we ran out of ammo. Tons of fun, they explode, spin, flip, disappear, and there are endless supplies of the little vermin.

22's, 12 gauge's, and a spot light!

We would always see giant blue Herron in the fields we worked the day after just gorging them self's on dead rats. They got’ a eat too!

I live in an area that had been undeveloped until a housing project sprung up. One evening I spotted my cat coming in from the field behind our house. He was draging something. He'd drag it a few feet, stop and rest, then drag it some more. The next morning I discovered his trophy on our steps, a foot long rat. God it was big. I called the local university to inquire about it and was told that Montreal, like most island cities had huge rats. It seems they've ben here forever and building housing projects disturbs them. It looked like a small muskrat, scared hell out of me at first. Best wishes.

We used to have a large hog farm and frequently went out during the evening with our pistols and would move the hog feeders. Rats would scurry everywhere while we opened fire. We were kids back then and lucky we didn't shoot each others feet off.
Yes, it is true. You need to have a good shot on a rat to kill it quickly. I have to say that I have run across a great 22lr ammo called "Quik-Shok" by CCI. This stuff is truely amazing. I have honestly shot *prairie dogs* at 100 yards from my CZ and they did not move versus when I have shot them with regular 22mag and they crumple and run off. For those who love to shoot crows, PDogs, kitty kats, whatever with a 22lr, do yourself a favor and buy a box. You WILL NOT regret it. http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/712296

When I was a teen my friends and I used to go to an wooded lot behind the city hospital and shoot them with home made blow guns. We made them with about ¾ inch PVC pipe and made our own darts with coat hangers. We would just sharpen one end, vend the other end and put some yarn in it. They were good to 15-20 feet. They would not die with one shot but they got nailed to the ground. That was probably the most fun I ever had. In a good day we could kill 20-25 in an hour (three kids). When it was slow, we would drag them to the middle of a football field and finish them there. A good stump was good enough when it was busy.
The good old days.

Rats were the first animals I ever shot after my Dad got me my first .22 rifle. He would take me down to the town dump about an hour before dusk and we'd bang away until dark. Fond memories that I'm afraid most kids today will never have. When I was in high school I always had a .22 rifle in a rack on my rear window and a box of ammo in the glove box so I could get out in the woods right after school. Can you imagine that today ?

Rats yea they were a lot of fun I used to do the same thing Minn Dick did at least once a week. Things are changeing all over. Dang Political Correctness.

I have shot as many as 500 rounds a night wearing a headlight and using a High Standard Double Nine .22 cal. pistol. That dump was crawling with rats we saw owls and all other kinds of predators feeding on rats. One night I remember my tally was 150 some rats out of 300 shots fired. I had a blast shooting at running rats as well as sitting still or maybe just a head sticking up from the rubble.

Ah alas those days are gone forever!

Haha! This cracks me up!

I remember many moons ago reading a writeup in Soldier of Fortune called 'Rat Jihad'. It was a story about these guys that took a shortcut one night behind a grocery store and saw a horde of rats. Anyway, they went home and grabbed the pellet rifles and taped mag lights to the barrels and the war was on! Of course, they ended up getting busted... Funny thing though-I've always wanted to find a place where they congregate like that! Have mag light and pellet rifle...will travel! Hehehe..
