RCBS 1010 broke

I believe the lead shot was placed on the pan to balance the beam itself. By removing shot, I suspect your beam is now 3 gr. out of balance?? You would normally adjust the level screw to make it read zero, then it should read correct weight of whatever you place in pan. Or am I missing something??

yeah. put the lead back in. zero with the front leg that screws up and down.

The part I can't figure out is that if I zero my scale, then put the 250gr check weight on it that it seems like it should read 250. maybe I'll put the weight back below the pan like it was and try it that way. I just figured that if I leveled my scale on a level platform, set the slide markers to read zero then just pull lead shot til it was zeroed all around.

I think you'll find that when you replace the shot that was removed, then follow directions to "Zero Balance" the scale at RCBS 10 10 intructions , it will read correctly.

I put the weight back in,way to heavy now and ran out of scale adjustment. Now to have the beam on level I have to slide the weight up to 20gr. I then put it up to 270gr,put on my 250gr wt and it read zero.

OK, let me be sure I understand the problem. You:

Replaced beam and
"Took shot out and got it to read perfect 0"
BUT
250 gr. test weight and "it doesn't balance by 3gr"

Then, after replacing the shot which had previously been removed,

A balance-beam scale requires a balanced beam to work properly. I believe that is the purpose of the lead shot from the factory. One thing that could enter into the equation is the powder pan as I would assume the beam is balanced with the pan that is shipped with a particular scale.

Something not adding up here. What I'm having problems understanding is how removal of shot resulted in a 3 gr. error while replacing it threw the reading off 20 grains?????

Wondering if the base could have been damaged in the fall. I don't have a 10 10 but looking at picture on RCBS site, the bearings and the "indicator" plate appear to be screwed or riveted to the base; perhaps one or both were jarred out of alignment????? I'd check to be sure the beam is moving freely in its bearings and that the magnetic damper is not hitting anything. If nothing evident there, I believe I'd give RCBS another call, tell them you have found another beam and could they calibrate the scale for you if you send it back to them.

I think ya understand the issue. Only other difference is that I am using my original pan and holder, maybe that is why I needed to remove the weight in order for it to balance. It's not like the scale fell far, only about 10" but in a way that it snapped the beam. The last scale I had to send in to Ohous, which was a new 505 that came with my kit was sent in 3 times. So the last time it came back I sent it to rcbs for a replacement of the 1010. Probably just end up finding another. Thanks all

Their repairs are done by O'hous,I had to do that with my 505 a couple times before sending it to rcbs for an exchange for the 10-10. That was a waste of shipping fee cause O'hous didn't fix the issue in the least.
