I havent ever loaded this powder yet, but i decided to load some up tonight in the 22-250. I went with 36.6 grains and a 55 gr v-max. I dont think i bought this powder for the 250 as i have never heard anyone talk much about it. Anyone here shooting it? What do you think of it? Thanks lee

Just a book comparison.
It's relative burn rate is slower than IMR 3031 which I used for years with my 250. But it's almost the same burn rate at Varget, which is very popular for the 250.

However, according to my Sierra book 36.6 grains is way over board HOT. Based on their book I'd start between 32 to 34gr., and work up a load starting lower.

I hope you haven't already loaded 100 or so.

I loaded up a bunch of Varget test loads tonight for my 22-250 w/55gr Vmax. I got to looking at my Hornady book for loads and compared them to a Hodgdon book for the same load. Max's were WAY different. 55gr Vmax/34.6gr Varget in the Hornady book and 55gr Vmax/36.5gr Varget in the Hodgdon book. 1.9 grains difference between loads???? I went with the Hodgdon numbers figuring they know their powders better than a bullet manufacturer. So much for the books. So with so much variation between two publications, what do you do? I started at 35.2 and went up .2 for five loads and stopped at 36. I'll try to get out tomorrow and see what they look like. With temps in the 30's, I'll definately keep an eye on the pressures this summer if I find a load I like.

According to Hornady's 7th edition.A max load of RL-15 with their 55 gr bullet's is 35.3 grain's.

O'h Lee i hope you took notice my post was intended to help you out..That's no joke..

Ya might want to bounce my comment's off a moderator..

No reply necessary.

First off, you ask the question "What do you think of it?"
My reply: Let me know when and where you'll be shooting that load because I want to be on the opposite side of the planet. Do you read me??? Why would you search for a load for the 55 grain bullet using RL-15, then make up loads that are 2 grains over Max? In the reloading game, you ALWAYS start low and work up to max. You NEVER start 2 grains over max....!!!!
Secondly: What possesed you to use a powder that is WAY off the beaten path for the 22-250 with 55 grain bullets? There have be COUNTLESS threads here on recommended loads for the 22-250, and NONE of them recommended RL-15. And none of the current loading manuals have it as a recommended load.
Are you on a death wish?

Martyn

Edit to add: Pull the bullets on those loads, dump the RL-15 back into its container, and READ the loading manuals for a RESPONSIBLE 55 grain bullet load!!!!!!

Alliants website list 37.5 as a max charge for 55gr vmax and RL15....I probably would not start as high as he did, but he is not that far off...

I think RL-15 is a very good powder with many applications. I even have some loaded up for a 22-250 but I don't have the stats in front of me. I will agree the Hodgdon book is usually on the high side especially compared to Sierra. I look over several manuals before starting with a load & even then don't hang out at max.

Skeet you should be fine at that loading. The Speer manual shows 37.5 max with 52gr bullets and I have loaded 52gr bullets to 36.5 with no pressure signs and was getting 3650fps. As mentioned above Alliant shows 37.5 max with the 55's so let us know how they do. Not sure why Martyn thinks that this powder is way off for the 22-250? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I agree. QuickLoad lists RL15 as one of the top five powders for the .22-250 and 55 VMaxes. While this specific load is approaching max, it shouldn't be approaching anything near the red zone, barring some very unusual "gun specifics".

This is one of the few times that I've seen the recommendations here at PM scattered as the much as the reloading books recommendations.

And Martyn don't be so hard on him---at least Skeetlee asked questions before proceeding.

However, I can't imagine anyone recommending a starting load for someone else, that's above maximum load in ANY known reloading book.

skeetlee,

I stumbled into RL 15 for my 22-250 and it shoots great in my M700 VLS. 35.0 grs with a 55 gr BT shoots sub .5 MOA.
